Having returned from a trip to Europe this summer, I found this book and was interested in seeing if Yvoire, a cute little French medieval village on the shores of Lake Geneva, was included in this book. We visited Yvoire in mid-June and although the town received some tourists throughout the day, my wife and I spent the night in Yvoire and I couldn't pick out one other tourist in the town. It was our favorite place in all of Europe.

Sure enough, this book dedicates two entire pages to Yvoire. I had to get this book to look for other French villages we should visit on our next trip! This is a very good, informative book, written with warmth and humour by someone who obviously has a great affection for the area and it's people. I've visited Salt Lake City for the last 4 years as a tourist and, as I read this book I'm back there smiling at it's quirks, looking around it's buildings, eating in it's restaurants and shopping in it's malls. The book is as easy going as the place it describes and is written logically, filling the reader in with the history and background before moving them around the city with added knowledge and appreciation of all that's there. This book will be my companion when I visit again this year. Oh and why only 4 stars - colour photographs instead of black and white please!

I tried to find this guide in a local bookstore - a big one - and they were out (it's popular here) so I got it based on past experience with Insider Guides - all of which I have used and liked.

We were planning a trip to New Bern and it exactly fit the bill. It listed the attractions and did a good job of explaining them, some of which we would have missed if we did not have the book. For example, if you buy a ticket to the Tryon Palace, it includes admission to four other attractions, a fact we might have missed were it not for the guide. We also relied on it for restaurants, and ate at four that were listed, all were good. One would hope that an "Insider's" Guide might have ratings and/or recommendations - for hotels in particular. A mere list and description of them is something that can easily be obtained with a quick search of the internet. They have a section for Bed & Breakfasts, but I couldn't find any of the particular resorts I was interested in. To truly be helpful, help us decide which places are best for the family, for couples, etc. with a simple star rating system.
