Most travel guides concentrate on providing substantial listings of places to go, places to stay, and places to eat. "Insight Guides Alaska" goes a different route. Here, the emphasis is on narrative articles, accompanied by maps and color photography, that provide a sense of what a destination is like. In the case of a wonderfully diverse destination such as Alaska, this type of information may be more useful to the traveler than statistics or long listing of motels.

If you're planning a trip to Iceland, or if you want an "armchair" trip there, get this book! You'll love it. I'm planning my first visit in December, and hopefully will be moving there permanently. This book convinces me it is the best place in the world to live. A real page turner, I couldn't put it down!

Recently we attended a wedding in Portland, Oregon and decided to see some things while we were there. This book was extremely helpful as we were deciding what to see and do. This book is colorful and so pleasing to the eye. There are lots of pictures and the maps are excellent. It gives a general overview of the area, and you learn a bit about the history too. We narrowed down what we could do in the time we had available and we took in the Columbia River Gorge area including Multnomah Falls, Portland (definitely go to Powell's Bookstore - one of the largest bookstores in the world), and then part of the Oregon coast. We bought this book before traveling to Norway. It gave us so much valuable information. We traveled along the fjords, Bergen, and Oslo. We would have missed so much if it were not for this book. It even prepared us to expect the astronomic price of food. I think it made for a great trip because of the information in this book. Do not even think of traveling to Norway without this guide. It is worth every penny.

All in all I was disappointed with this book. I purchased it as a guide around T&T, but it's not very useful for that. It's a great source of information about Trinidad, as far as the history and culture, but don't waste your money if you're looking for a solid guidebook. The best book by far was the Rough Guide to T&T. I spent 9 days there and the Rough Guide was literally my Bible, I didn't go anywhere without it. If you're planning a trip and need a solid guide book for where to stay, where to go, and how to get around, don't purchase the Insight Guide. If you're into colorful pictures and historical information, this is the book for you.

Once again the Insight Guides have done a superb job. After two trips to this marvelous Central American country I can only say that the guide has fully done it justice. If you can read this guide and not go there, you're a stronger man than I am.

I love these insight guides; very interesting,& packed full of info and beautiful pictures. Gives the traveler a working knowledge of sites to see, customs, history, politics and the ideology of the people of a given region. It is not meant to be an extensive study of an area, but a useful travel guide, and for that purpose it earns 5 stars easily ! It is not a guide of where to stay or where to eat, but it gives useful information about each area covered so that a traveler knows what a locale has to offer and some background on each area. Great to pack in the suitcase or browse in the armchair !

My wife and I retired in Venezuela 2 years ago. The Insight Guide is a very beautiful book, and fun to just read, like a paperback coffee table book. We found the Footprint guide often unorganized. When we really want information, we go to our Bradt Travel Guide.

Lots of striking photos, thoughtful discussions of historical and cultural topics, useful descriptions of important attractions, and mention of top restaurants and accommodations make this a worthwhile guide for adults traveling in New Mexico. It would serve well as a valuable and interesting supplemental guide to enrich a trip, but not as a primary source of basic travel information. Traveling families will also want to consult other guides as activities for children are not addressed. As its name suggests, this guide provides insights, not facts and figures, but it does that very well.
