This is my favorite book that I've read this year, inspiring and fascinating. Others have summarized it well, so I simply want to say that it's a wonderful adventure.

I bought this book based upon the previous rave reviews. I guess I wasn't ready
to entirely believe what I read in them, but they are true. Usually, when
I buy a "travel book," I think of Fodor's or something from AAA. But this
is a work of fine literature. It has the stamp of a warrior poet, not just
a travel maven. Mr. Stanley delivers crafted lectures in this book, and I
feel he is sitting right next to me as I read it. Now, I know he wants me to
actually go to these islands myself, but he does such a masterful job of
discussing the experience and preparing the traveler intellectually and
emotionally for the trip that sometimes as I read it I feel as if I really

This was my first Rough Guide purchase as I have always been a fan of Lonely Planet. I bought the Argentina guide since it was published recently and used it specifically for a trip to Buenos Aires. I thought that the information was relatively good in terms of descriptions of neighborhoods in general, but not detailed enough for my tastes. Pricing is difficult, even for a very recent edition, due to the inflation in Argentina. However, I prefer Lonely Plant for giving more substantive historical backgrounds in their guides as well as telling it as it is in their hotel, restaurant, etc. reviews.

We just returned from visiting Ecuador for the first time. Between the four of us, we had several choices for guidebooks, but found The Rough Guide to Ecuador to be the most helpful when looking for a place to eat or to sleep. We'll only take this one if we go back!

Bought this for our second trip to Chile and found it very unhelpful. The quality of the 'plastitized' paper and the printing quality seemed very good. But then we tried to use it. Kept getting lost and stuck on wrong routes etc. Then we would go back to our old map, which was paper and in shreds, but it had all the secondary route numbers or at least put those routes on the correct end of town or in the right area so we could find the turn off. They need to go back to their sources on this one for better data.

'The New Key to Costa Rica' is the best guide/travel book on this Central American country I've found yet. I'm contemplating moving to Costa Rica and am planning my first trip later this year. Beatrice apparently updates this guide every other year to keep it current. There is a great focus on eco-friendly traveling and she can personally help you design a trip to your specifications. This book is chock full of practical information on everything you could ever want to know about Costa Rica. Look no further if you want the best guide for this country.

We're using this map now to plan a Patagonia trip next year. I wish I had 1:24000 scale maps to supplement this overview. A 1:80K map with 100 meter contours leaves a lot to the imagination. However it is very helpful supplenet to a good guidebook like the Lonely Planet Patagonian Andes book.

Unlike some of the other reviewers, I found this book a thoroughly researched and detailed guide to traveling Colombia. No travel guide to a rapidly changing country can be 100% perfect, but this one hit the mark more than not. I`m also pleased to see it includes lots of personal insight to stuff that`s off the beaten track. Good stuff.
