This book definitely made our trip to Costa Rica much easier. The good thing about it is that he lists surf spots without telling you too much about them so you still have the element of exploration in your trip. And you still get to discover your own. I would recommend reading this before you go and Costa Rica is an amazing place to surf!

I bought this book because, having extensively traveled in Peru and horse-packed in the Peruvian Andes, I was interested in what the book had to say. Although the book was written 24 years before I first went to Peru, it was interesting to see how little had changed in those ensuing years. Not having been in the Amazon basin, I cannot speak to Peter Matthiesen's observations about the Indian tribes in the area, although I detected a lot of "gringo" condescension on his part. I flat out disagree with his characterizations of the "altiplano" indians, finding them warm, humorous and interested in "turistas" and travelers. The young children are amazing! Viva Travel Guides is the newest entrant in the crowded field of travel guidebooks. As can be said of many youngsters, it has potential but needs discipline and polish. Much of the writing is pedestrian, repetitive, and sloppy; the book is full of typos and bad grammar; and it contains some whoppers of misinformation and tortured geography.

I lived in Cusco for a year a few years ago and know Southern Peru well. I bought this book to see how it measures up to the more established guides. While it is certainly serviceable, and will get you around the country without major mishap, it desperately needs a sharp-eyed editor to tighten and focus the writing, and correct the inaccuracies. I purchased this Atlas for a very specific purpose: as a research aid for my eleven year old granddaughter's geography homework, which involves locating cities from particular states and generally navigating the map of the United States. I ordered the regular atlas, but was contacted by the vendor because only the large print was available. I ordered the large print and have not been disappointed. At best, maps are difficult to navigate and the larger print is a definite bonus.

The atlas features colorful, easy to read road maps of the US, Mexico, Canada and Puerto Rico, 3-D elevation shading, highlighted scenic routes, tourism information, quick reference guides to mileage, etc. Spiral bound, this particular edition is oversized. Although it ... Read More:

On my visit to Costa Rica, this was helpful in identifying butterflies and moths, of which there are many, many species. This laminated card contains many of those I saw, but, of course, was far from a comprehensive guide. It is sturdy and fits easily in a backpack.

This was a good book, but nothing fabulous, however I did like it better than the Moon Handbook we bought (which I normally like more!). This is definitely geared toward the mid-range traveler, and we liked that about this book.

The prices were fairly accurate, and the food recommendations were good. We stayed at the Anchorage Resort in Caye Caulker, and it wasn't listed in the book. That is unfortunate as it's a very decent place.

Also, the beautiful casitas that are featured in the opening pages are nowhere to be found in the book. We stumbled upon them in Caye Caulker, checked them out, but found them a little too rustic for our tastes (Ignacio's Resort).

I've lived and worked in Belize for approximately 6 months/year for the past 10 years. The Moon Handbooks Belize is the most accurate and up to date book on the market. Josh has spent months in Belize to insure it's accuracy...everything thing he writes is from first hand experience.
