This book isn't written like all the other boring guides. It's hip, it's cool, it's gritty, and by the time you're done reading it you feel like you just made a new friend in Rio. The author does a brilliant job of breaking the 3rd wall and really brings you to his marvelous city.

I took three guides with me on my 5 week journey through Brazil (Sept/Oct 2007): L.P., Footprint, Frommer's. Lonely Planet would have been my first choice, BUT, it's dated. Its publication date of 2005 means that the research was done 2003-2004. Many things have change in four years. The prices in this guide have doubled and some restaurants and hotels that are listed have closed and/or the quality of some has seriously declined. But first, the positive.

No other guide except Footprint (see my review) comes close to the covering all of Brazil. However, LP is the best guide to have if you are backpacking and thinking of crossing into other countries at remote border crossing.

I found Paige Penland's version of Lonely Planet's Costa Rica Guide to be better than the more recent version. Her writing is always such a good read - she's the Queen of Travel Writing!

I usually love the Lonely Planet series, but this book is just a listing of restaurants and hotels along the Mexican coast. There is no information about day trips away from the major cities. A friend of mine pointed out that the cover says it all - that picture could have been taken anywhere! So how did this guide earn two stars instead of one? The history section, as usual, is very good, as is the general travel information for Mexico (information about driving and using phones, etc).

This book is better than not having a travel guide, but I was really happy to have a copy of Moon Puerto Vallarta: Including the Nayarit and Jalisco Coasts (Moon Handbooks) as well. That had excellent information about small towns and other interesting ... Read More:

Please ignore the review from the idiot who doesn't know how to read a map. This map has a fine scale, with mileage marked in kilometers (maybe they don't know the difference between kilometers and miles? Or just can't read a map?)

We actually ran into one place where the map was out of date, and a new road was not marked--I would recommend getting the more recent version of this map. It is excellent, though, and definitely a must for a drive across the Yucatan. It's tough and waterproof and virtually indestructible. I did wish there was a detail map of major towns, at least Merida and Cancun.
