Call me old fashioned but from what I recall camping involves pitching a tent and sleeping in it. This book has very little to do with camping. It has a lot of information concerning driving around Mexico in those enormous RV's (sometimes I wonder what is the point of leaving home).

This book does have a lot of useful information concerning border crossings and insurance and the like. It also some very nice descriptions of the towns and activities in the area.

It's got the bare essential data you need for the hike.
Mileage, water sources, post offices, grocery stores, etc.
Don't leave your domicile without it.

Marching Powder is a ghost written account of an Englishman's incarceration in an Bolivian jail.

Whilst the book is no great work of literature, the amazing world that it uncovers is worthy of reading about, and intriging enough to make you want to read on and on.

Unlike other prison memoirs that I have read, such as The Damage Done: Twelve Years of Hell in a Bangkok Prison (highly recomended) - this prison is not the ultra violent place you might imagine.

As long as you have the money, prisoners can live a reasonably comfortable life, set up businesses, have friends over to stay, even go out night clubbing!

A good read - purley for the insight into such a weird world.

Really handy! It's unbelievable the amount of rare phrases that are in this book that you can't find anywhere else (example: Pull my finger= Pushe meu dedo). It covers a wide variety of topics like food and sex and parties. However, I found that the pronunciations guide kinda sucks. I'm not sure if I learned a different accent of Brazilian Portuguese (my teacher is from Brasilia), but the phonetic pronunciations they include were way off (for example, they never mention the fact that 'te' as in 'arte' is pronounced like 'chee' as in 'cheese'). Also, the organization of the book could have been a lot better. It took me HOURS to find a basic phrase (I'm hungry) because it was not put in a section with food or anything food/restaurant related. But ... Read More:

This book has a great break down by city. There are sections for different activities. It is very descriptive and informative; the sections include pricing estimates in USD whenever possible. I highly recommend this guide if you are even considering traveling in Chile -- it will probably convince you to go!

I bought this book because a friend and I intend to ride from North to South America in 2018 when all our kids have grown old enough not to miss us. I really hope that we don't have to live through what Glen did but who knows what the continent will be like in 10 years? This is a brilliantly written book with lots of good information and tips for travel. The section on Columbia is well done and doesn't overdominate the story. I wonder from Ted Simon's comments in 'Dreaming of Jupiter' after meeting Glen following his ordeal, if Glen has downplayed his emotional state a little. They've written so many of these guides that they are becoming a tad generic on their advice. I bought this and found a lot of information outdated to inaccurate when I arrived. However, if you're not planning on going to Rio right away, and find yourself very curious about this great city, I would definitely recommend it. It is very interesting, and completely different to western culture. If you're young and into the singles scene, or on business like I was and want more of a sure thing with brazilian women, I would recommend adding with this title The Hedonist: World Sex Guide - Single Male Erotic Vacations in Rio, Costa Rica, Thailand, Carribean and much more

this guide was extremely helpful and informative during our trip, it had lots of info not only on cancun and cozumel but also on the mayan ruins and other great places to see like playa del carmen and tulum

This guidebook provides a very balanced & well put together information on the country. The author, being a "zonian" himself (one who grew up in the former Panama Canal Zone) & continues to spend time in the country, has a vast knowledge of the area. From the usual tourist areas to the people, history & culture; from the not so well known areas to do's & dont's, he covers it very well. Some information may be a bit outdated but a new edition is coming this November. What I like the most is that - unlike some other guides - he covers whatever is negative in a constructive manner without being overly critical. Having just returned from a week in Guatemala, I bought this book because it packed a lot of information into its pages and seemed to cover all the bases, and then some. However, I found the information in the Moon guide to Guatemala surprisingly thin or just plain inaccurate with respect to what one really needs to know about a place. For example, Moon's advice on Antigua is unhelpful or outdated: the tourist office is located elsewhere; the restaurants deserve better descriptions; and the best shops are given short-shrift. Additionally, it doesn't deliver the good regarding practical information on excursions.
