We are planning a trip to Chile and the information in this guide nicely compliments our other guide to Chile by Insight Guide. We recommend both; one is great for pictures and the Frommer's Guide is packed with valuable travel recommendations.

They've written so many of these guides that they are becoming a tad generic on their advice. I bought this and found a lot of information outdated to inaccurate when I arrived. However, if you're not planning on going to Rio right away, and find yourself very curious about this great city, I would definitely recommend it. It is very interesting, and completely different to western culture. If you're young and into the singles scene, or on business like I was and want more of a sure thing with brazilian women, I would recommend adding with this title The Hedonist: World Sex Guide - Single Male Erotic Vacations in Rio, Costa Rica, Thailand, Carribean and much more

I recently returned from a month of independent travel in Peru using the Moon Handbook:Peru as my major guide. Thank goodness I also consulted a number of other books because this book has numerous errors and bits of misinformation. I'm not talking about prices which I understand will change but of items the writers should have known about. For example, do not trust their information on the Cusco Tourist Ticket but research it elsewhere. Using the Handbook misinformation cost me money! Another example, after stating that Hotel Paracas was totally destroyed in the tragic 2007 earthquake, the following page contains a recommendation to have a meal there. One of my favorite genres of books is true-life survival tales. After deliberately searching for a new read, I found "Jungle". Jungle is the story of a young Isreali backpacker who falls in with a Swiss guy, a German guide and an American who decide to go on an adventure through the Bolivia. At one point, the group becomes separated and the story follows the Isreali as he struggles to survive in the rainy season in the Bolivian jungle.

The book is very interesting - you get glimpses of life as a backpacker/tourist floating through South America, a look at rural life in Bolivia, and raw survival from the narrator. I found this book only really useful for mammals. I had to supplement this book for amphibians, reptiles, and especially for birds. I found it is really only good for 'popular species' of the non-mammals. If you are a casual naturalist and only want to bring one book, it is ok, but if you trying to really id a lot of organisms and add to your life-list, this isn't a great book.
