. Gideon's Trumpet
City Travel Guides > Books > Law
by: Anthony Lewis
April 23, 1989
This book gives a great account of how a simple criminal case made its way to the Supreme Court, but also explains a lot about the court's reasoning when it comes to criminal cases and stare decisis. Also helps show how a brilliant legal minds works, and highlights the differences between a lawyer and a person with no professional knowledge of the law - differences that any law student must overcome if they are to be successful.

. The Return of Martin Guerre
City Travel Guides > Books > Law
by: Natalie Zemon Davis
1984-07
This companion volume to the film (it was written as that, expressly) can be read and enjoyed by someone who's never seen that film. That would be me, as it happens.
A 16th Century peasant named Martin Guerre abandons his wife and child, and disappears from his home area completely for many years. When a man arrives in their village claiming to be the long absent Martin, and knowing details about his life there, his family decides that the physical differences they see must be due to the time that's passed. After all, the Martin who went away was no more than a youth. Eventually, though, Martin's uncle makes up his mind that this man is an imposter. Bertrande de Rols, Martin's wife, finds herself in an awkward position because the suit is ... Read More:

. 'Tis: A Memoir
City Travel Guides > Books > Law
by: Frank McCourt
August 29, 2000
Frank McCourt once again takes us on a tour of his life, this time from the age of nineteen to his fifties. As with Angela's Ashes, his storytelling is quintessentially Irish, and the reader can almost hear his brogue as he tells his tale. Again, this book is full of Irish humor and sensibility, but is much darker than its prequel, Angela's Ashes. I fully expected to love this book as much as Angela's Ashes, but I had a difficult time coming to terms with the way Frank McCourt presents himself as well as his mother this time around.
Certainly, Mr. McCourt is not in this world to live up to my expectations, but I was so disappointed to learn that he had let alcohol grab hold of him even after describing how his drunken father had made his childhood ... Read More:

. Special Agent: My Life on the FrontLines as a W in the FBI
City Travel Guides > Books > Law
by: Candice Delong
April 25, 2001
I met with Candice when she bought the apartment I was renting in San Francisco last year. As we parted, she gave me her book as a gift. As I started reading her book, I could not let go of it until I finished it. Candice talks about her extraordinary life as a bright, energetic and successful female agent, and a single mother. The book is full of interesting stories, which shed light to the life in FBI. Despite of all her strengths, she struggles for the acceptance of her male peers throughout her career, but she never gives up. Among many interesting stories, she tells how she learned to shoot with a shotgun, which ended up dislocating her shoulder, which apparently never healed. Although the police-work naturally required lots of physical power, she managed to overcame ... Read More:

. Trial Techniques, 7e
City Travel Guides > Books > Law
by: Thoms A. Mauet
February 14, 2007
The book is well written. Every lawyer has their own style, so several of the "techniques" recommended in the book are criticized by practicing attorneys. The chapters are pretty broad, I believe the entire book is less than 10 chapters: picking a jury, opening statement, direct, cross, exhibits, closing statement, expert witnesses. The information is accurate but this book is not a how to.
