. How Judges Think
City Travel Guides > Books > Law
by: Richard A. Posner
April 30, 2008
I would agree with many of the reviewers that this is Posner at his finest. Although I tend to be skeptical of his articulation of pragmatism (especially via his selective use of economic theory), I found that this book really destroys the false binary that posits a clear split between activist and legalist judges.
Going beyond that, Posner also takes clear aim at the legal academy for mistaking the stated reasoning in legal opinions as the cause of a particular decision, rather than its effect. He makes it abundantly clear that legal scholars have lost connection with the judiciary and potentially the legal profession as a whole.
However, I can only give the four stars because the book desperately needed a good editor. ... Read More:

. The Color of Justice: Race, Ethnicity, and Crime in America
City Travel Guides > Books > Law
by: Samuel Walker, Cassia Spohn, Miriam DeLone
August 07, 2006
This book along with is Sense and Nonsense book was horrible. We used it for a Contemporary Issues in Criminal Justice class and none of the students or my teacher thought that either book was good. It was way too complex for people who just want the straight forward facts. In looking back at the book, it would not be my recommendation to use it. The whole class suffered in the potential learning due to these books. I respect Professor Walker with his teaching and serving on boards throughout the nation, but unfortunately, I cannot agree with this and his other book I used. I hope this review helps.

. The Challenge: Hamdan v. Rumsfeld and the Fight over Presidential Power
City Travel Guides > Books > Law
by: Jonathan Mahler
August 05, 2008
Here is an astonishing story in which two unlikely and oddly paired attorneys (read heroes) take on the United States government on behalf of a Yemeni citizen detained at Guantanamo. Neither Lt. Cmdr. Charles Swift, the navy lawyer assigned to the case, nor Neal Katyal, the Georgetown law professor who volunteered to help, could have imagined where the case would take them nor what it would require of their careers, family, and personal well being. But the story of what they did, how they did it, what it took, who helped, and how it all came out is as amazing as it is important, resulting in one of the most significant legal decisions of the post 9/11 era, the Supreme Court's ruling on Hamdan Against Rumsfeld. Jonathan Mahler relates the tangled and ... Read More:

. Fundamentals of Federal Income Taxation: Cases and Materials (University Casebook)

Hey everybody! We're all looking for a little break on the price of textbooks right? Sometimes buying an old edition is a little scary b/c you never know how far off it will be from the new one? Well, this is your lucky day b/c I took the plunge and sprung for the old edition. Guess what--The old edition is, at most, 3 pages off from the 14th all the way through chapter 18 (b/c that's as far as we got, but I'd be it's the same the rest of the way too!). Granted, problems were switched around, though rarely, and maybe the numbers in the problems would be different, again, rarely, but it literally took me just minutes to update entire "parts" (chunks of chapters). If you're looking to save a buck, buy the 13th edition and spend an extra few minutes in your ... Read More:

. Easy Spanish Reader
City Travel Guides > Books > Law
by: William T. Tardy, William Tardy
October 01, 2003
The beginning passages of this book are simple and relatively easy to understand even if you barely know Spanish at all, but by the end of the book the readings are more complex and challenging. This is a great way to get into Spanish if you know very little. My only complaint is that the exercises are fairly pointless because the answers are whole sentences straight from the text. However, the great passages and formatting make this book worth buying as an introductory Spanish text.

. Sense and Nonsense About Crime and Drugs: A Policy Guide
City Travel Guides > Books > Law
by: Samuel Walker
August 17, 2005
I am a professor who has used this book in my Crime class. The book is excellent in that it organizes policies around conservative and liberal viewpoints. It then brings in the latest research to either support or debunk the viewpoints of conservatives and liberals. The book is very dense and does an excellent job of addressing current crime policies. The focus is ultimately, what works and what doesn't regarding crime policies. The last chapter summarizes what does work. I like the book because it appeals to all students regardless of their political beliefs because Walker shows how BOTH conservatives and liberals are wrong in how they attempt to "fix" the crime problem. The biggest weakness of this book is that it is light on the theory but again, this ... Read More:
