. Let's Go Thailand 3rd Edition (Let's Go Thailand)
City Travel Guides > Books > Lets Go

Normally, I would have bought Lonely Planet, but their Thailand book was almost 3 years old, so I went with the more recently published Let's Go. I have never been a fan of Let's Go, but was surprised by how useful this book turned out. It's coverage of the country is less inclusive than Lonely Planet, so it is only really useful for short-term touring of the country. My trip was only 2 weeks long, which was fine for this book. It is printed on very lightweight paper, so the book itself is probably half the weight of the LP guidebook.
While Lonely Planet remains the best source for encyclopedic information such as population sizes for cities, it rarely provides very much opinion. This Let's Go book filled in that gap, providing ... Read More:

. Let's Go Puerto Rico 3rd Edition (Let's Go Puerto Rico)
City Travel Guides > Books > Lets Go
by: Janet Evanovich
November 27, 2007
I travel to PR frequently for my job. I like to always have a guidebook with me in case I have a new person with me or venture somewhere new. I bought the Let's Go because my most recent Lonely Planet guide was 4 years old (too old for a guidebook) and the new one wasn't coming out until mid-summer. The Let's Go book was a disappointment. The information is insufficient, poorly organized, etc. For example, in the sections about Culebra and Vieques (places I love to visit), it fails to mention how to get to the ferry dock in Fajardo from San Juan - you either need to drive there and park (and finding the dock is NOT easy in Fajardo as putting up helpful signs is not something PR does well), or you can take a publico (they do tell you where the station ... . Let's Go Amsterdam 5th Edition (Let's Go Amsterdam)
City Travel Guides > Books > Lets Go
by: Janet Evanovich
November 27, 2007
As usual, Let's Go has written an excellent guide for the city you need. Especially, it is filled with $ saving tips and side trips -- no $200 a night hotels wasting half of the book.
Most importantly, though, Amsterdam is a special city. The governmental tolerance there (even if you do not choose to partake in the famous vices of this flowing canal metropolis) can be felt. For me, I was both happy and sad. Happy to be in a place where it is legal to do almost anything as long as you are not hurting anybody. Sad because part of me wonders how much my inner self has been diminished by growing up in a relatively fascist state.
Anyway, this guide leads to very inexpensive hotels, bars, "coffee shops," museums, and all that this wonderful ... Read More:

. Let's Go Chile 2nd Edition: Including Easter Island (Let's Go Chile)
City Travel Guides > Books > Lets Go
from: Let's Go Publications
November 18, 2004
I used this book two years ago during a trip that took me from Hong Kong to GuangZhou, XiAn, TianShui, JiaYuGuan, DunHuang and Urumqi, and even though it was useful as a geographical and cultural guide, ALL the prices were way way off for all the places I visited in XiAn and Western China. I don't know about Eastern China, but the prices to most of the hotels and sights/parks were actually DOUBLE what they were supposed to be, according to the Let's Go guide. Big big disappointment there.
I ended up expecting prices to be double what the book said, and was able to plan the last part of my trip pretty accurately.
Another big mistake was NOT to include the PinYin accents on all the city and sight names. In the Lonely Planet, you just look ... Read More:

. Let's Go 2003: Israel
City Travel Guides > Books > Lets Go
by: Janet Evanovich
December 01, 2002
Bought this book a couple of weeks before traveling to Israel. Guidebooks invariably save you much more than the money you spend in buying them, and this book was not an exception. Found it very informative and easy to read. We visited Israel at Passover and Easter (Orthodox)--were there from April 17 through April 24, 2006. It was a busy tourist season and the book proved helpful in making first night's reservation in Tel Aviv (at Hotel Nes Ziona). [Next day we found a comparable but cheaper hotel (Hotel Eilat, not mentioned in Let's Go) not too far away and moved there.] Generally speaking, in lodging and eating we found prices higher than those cited in the book. This was expected as the book was printed in 2003 based on research done in August 2000 and the publisher ... Read More:

. Let's Go Vietnam 2nd Edition (Let's Go Vietnam)
City Travel Guides > Books > Lets Go
by: Janet Evanovich
November 09, 2006
I bought this book and the Rough Guide to Vietnam. Thinking I didn't want to lug around both books, I left the Rough Guide at home and took this one. It seemed like it would be more useful given the proper Vietnamese writing of names/places and the more recent publication date. What a terrible mistake on my part. My traveling buddies had a boot-legged version of the Lonely Planet, which we relied on much more than this guide.
This book lacks information about sites, accomodations and restaurants that was easily found in the Lonely Planet, and was much better described in the Rough Guide. For the places we stayed, the descriptions of the accomodations were sometimes not at all accurate. Maps were also better in the Lonely Planet.
The only thing that was somewhat ... Read More:
