. Silks
City Travel Guides > Books > Literature and Fiction
by: Dick Francis, Felix Francis
August 26, 2008
Most of the reviewers have covered my feelings. All I could add was that I could tell that Mr. Francis didn't write this book alone. It seemed too "wordy" at times and seemed to make Mason, the police and most everyone involved seem pretty stupid. Found myself being very frustrated as the story went along.

. Downtown Owl: A Novel
City Travel Guides > Books > Literature and Fiction
by: Chuck Klosterman
September 16, 2008
What I have always enjoyed about Chuck Klosterman is his ability to succinctly comment on popular culture while bringing a strong element of humor to the absurdity of modern times. In Downtown Owl, Klosterman takes a fictional snapshot of small town life and richly interweaves pop references from the early 80's into in-depth descriptions of the inner feelings of his character's in the book. You truly get a sense of the inner struggles faced by lives living in the small fishbowl of a town on the prairie while coming to understand that life is no different there than it is in cities and towns all across the country.
A delightful read -- tight, succinct, masterfully laid out and the rolling dialogue keeps the reader engaged -- you will find yourself ... Read More:

. The Curious Incident of the Dog in the Night-Time
City Travel Guides > Books > Literature and Fiction
by: Mark Haddon
May 18, 2004
Although a work of fiction, The Curious Incident of the Dog in the Night-Time, is a surprisingly insightful journey into the world of one Autistic boy. A great read for those new to the world of Autism, or looking for a non-technical window into how the disorder could affect one individual. Written with compassion and clarity, it is a quick read, can easily be completed in a day or two, and is suitable for teen readers. I found it to be moving, memorable and somewhat mind-expanding. Any good book will give you the opportunity to mentally 'try on someone else's shoes', this book will put you inside the mind that many will find unfamiliar, perplexing, perhaps even alien, but not without it's charms. For those looking for a comprehensive look at Autism, this book will ... Read More:

. Love the One You're With
City Travel Guides > Books > Literature and Fiction
by: Emily Giffin
May 13, 2008
Ellen is the most boring character in the world. There is nothing to like about her - so I'm at a loss as to how this old-money Southern family lets her be part of their life.
Two huge errors....First, I have never in my life met anyone FROM Pittsburgh that doesn't think Pittsburgh is the greatest city in the world. Ellen, apparently, hates Pittsburgh. I could see if she was from Johnstown or Allentown - but Pittsburgh? Please! And I'm not even from there.
Second - and I wonder if the editor was dozing during the reading - Girl Scout cookies are never sold in August. Ever. Shortly after they move to Atlanta, she mentions a girl scout came to her door selling cookies. The have a big cookie fiasco in the winter - never the summer. Errors like ... Read More:

. Gilead: A Novel
City Travel Guides > Books > Literature and Fiction
by: Marilynne Robinson
January 10, 2006
I rate this one star only because there are not negative stars. As another reviewer said there is no beginning, no middle, and no end. It is simply a rambling monologue with no plot or purpose; except to make money for the author. This was a gift so at least I did not spend the money; but it is a shame anyone did. I read it all the way through (which makes me more stupid than those that quit at half way), thinking it would get better; it did not.
