. The Elegance of the Hedgehog
City Travel Guides > Books > Literature and Fiction
by: Muriel Barbery
September 02, 2008
This is a wonderful book, the kind that comes around every once in a while. It follows two main characters, one a concierge for a building in Paris, and the other a young girl who has decided to commit suicide when she turns 14 because she feels that adulthood is awful.
The concierge hides the fact that she is very well self educated and enjoys art, books, and music. She does not want to appear to be out of her class. The child is known through a journal she is keeping, writing about things she considers important, and how she intends to end her life.
A new owner who is Asian buys an apartment and completely remodels it. He comes to realize that the concierge is not what she appears to be and they become friends. ... Read More:

. Cosmicomics
City Travel Guides > Books > Literature and Fiction
by: Italo Calvino
October 04, 1976
Ever since our ancestors started looking into the night sky, the saw patterns and connections between the stars, moons and planets, and used stories and myths to imbue those patterns with meaning and structure. With the big hindsight of the scientific worldview, all those ancient stories may seem quaint and naïve. And indeed, the advent of modern astronomy and astrophysics has greatly enriched and deepened our understanding of the Cosmos. But these wonderful new insights should not be taken in opposition to our imagination when we stare in the sky. And this is the starting point of Italo Calvino's wonderful book "Cosmicomics." It is in a sense a variation on the theme of Cosmos. Each one of the chapters in the book takes a certain scientific fact about the Cosmos, ... Read More:

. How Fiction Works
City Travel Guides > Books > Literature and Fiction
by: James Wood
July 22, 2008
Breathtaking exposition on the development of the novel over the last few centuries, in particular the "realist" style. Brilliant non-fiction gem about fiction. Opinionated rather than encyclopedic, but a great touchstone for further reading.
The design of the book is particularly inviting--its modest weight, friendly typeface, and wide margins make this book a pleasant evening companion--a book you aren't afraid to ask out on a second date. I plan to re-read it once or twice if I ever get it back.
Bracing, memorable writing. If you want to add another dimension to your appreciation of the novel, this gorgeously edited book is ideal. If, like me, you are a writer of non-fiction, this book is a model.
If, on the other hand, you want cheerleading ... Read More:

. Catch-22
City Travel Guides > Books > Literature and Fiction
by: Joseph Heller
September 04, 1996
Catch-22 is a jarring, thrilling, hysterical exposition of the oppression and dominance which pervades lives and lifestyles in the modern era. Full of classic dialogue, superb characters, wonderfully narrated, Catch-22 may be the best book ever written. A heartbreaking achievement of staggering genius!

. World War Z: An Oral History of the Zombie War
City Travel Guides > Books > Literature and Fiction
by: Max Brooks
October 16, 2007
For a book with they "silly" premise of a zombie uprising threatening all of humanity, the stories contained within are poignant, touching, and most important believable.
The book was so engrossing, I purchased it and had it completely read in a single weekend.
It's hard to describe the emotions this book stirred up. Anger, remorse, pride, all of these things. And joy at discovering someone making a daring escape. Sorrow when learning that the person being interviewed has lost a bit of his or her mind because of what they've been through.
I didn't know what to expect when I purchased this book. Not really. I have had the Zombie Survival Guide for a while. When I bought it, it was in the "humor" section. "World War Z" took the tongue-in-cheek approach from that ... Read More:
