. Cosmicomics
City Travel Guides > Books > Literature and Fiction
by: Italo Calvino
October 04, 1976
Ever since our ancestors started looking into the night sky, the saw patterns and connections between the stars, moons and planets, and used stories and myths to imbue those patterns with meaning and structure. With the big hindsight of the scientific worldview, all those ancient stories may seem quaint and naïve. And indeed, the advent of modern astronomy and astrophysics has greatly enriched and deepened our understanding of the Cosmos. But these wonderful new insights should not be taken in opposition to our imagination when we stare in the sky. And this is the starting point of Italo Calvino's wonderful book "Cosmicomics." It is in a sense a variation on the theme of Cosmos. Each one of the chapters in the book takes a certain scientific ... Read More:

. Wolfsbane and Mistletoe
City Travel Guides > Books > Literature and Fiction
from: Ace Hardcover
October 07, 2008
My primary interest was in the Harris, Green, Vaughn, Briggs & Chance stories. All these stories are set in the authors' most famous universes (I consider that Nightside for Simon R. Green), the Harris story has Sookie in it, & the Vaughn story has Kitty in it. The Harris, Green, & Chance stories were minor, but fun. The Vaughn & Briggs ones are whole novellas, & really good. Special credit goes to Nancy Pickard for unusual idea (Santa as a vampire), but the true WTF award goes to the unknown J.A. Konrath, for a decently-written story involving evil Santas, gun-toting Satan-worshipping Salvation Army minions, the lost (biblical) book of Bob, a were-anon group, a hippo, & many other interesting characteristics. Trust me, ... Read More:

. Keeping Faith
City Travel Guides > Books > Literature and Fiction
by: Jodi Picoult
August 26, 2008
I was very disappointed in this book. It is not up to the level of Jodi Piccoult's other novels. The storyline lacked believablity, the writing was poor, some of the characters were either cardboard cutouts or unrealistic (and one in particular was lifted from The Rainman), and the book needed serious editing. After the first 100 pages, I skipped large chunks in a valiant effort to reach the end. If I hadn't already read many of Jodi Picoult's other novels before this one, I would have thought she was a bad author. She didn't do herself justice with this one. She is capable of a lot more.

. Angel: After the Fall: First Night Volume 2
City Travel Guides > Books > Literature and Fiction
by: Joss Whedon, Brian Lynch, John Byrne, Tim Kane, David Messina, Stephen Mooney, Nick Runge
September 29, 2008
This collection features some of the weakest and some of the strongest parts of "After the Fall." Naturally, the flow isn't as strong as the actual meat of the series (issues 1-5, 9-) because this is made up of five-seven page one-shots that tell what happened to the characters between "Not Fade Away" and "After the Fall." These comics are a lot more hit-and-miss than the actual story arc of "After the Fall," but the overall reading experience is a good one.
Spike's story definitely gets better with each read. The Connor/Kate story is also very good, as is the Gwen tale. Both have their strengths, and both have their weaknesses. There was a tale that a lot of people seemed skeptical about, but I thought it was sad, poignant, and really hilarious. Civilians shows ... Read More:

. The Force Unleashed (Star Wars)
City Travel Guides > Books > Literature and Fiction
by: Sean Williams
August 19, 2008
For a long time I had anticipated the release of Lucasarts' new game, "The Force Unleashed." Ironically enough, I have yet to play any more than the demo, but ran out and purchased this novel and the companion graphic novel as well. Although the events laid out in literary form are indeed pivotal to the rest of the saga, they are related in a bland and distanced narrative. The characters themselves have promise, but their motives and choices are somewhat confusing and unbelievable. The 'tell it like it is' style of writing here is perhaps on par with a junior novel adaptation of a film, made all the worse by the fact that it covers the events of a video game. One can clearly pick out the "boss fights" as they would exist in the game and each chapter seems to cover a "level," ... Read More:
