. Wicked: The Life and Times of the Wicked Witch of the West (Harper Fiction)

As a preface, I'm a huge fantasy fan, a lover of the Wizard of Oz movie, and I absolutely LOVED the play Wicked--I couldn't get enough. I thought that the play was clever, important, heart-wrenching and really well-done. I knew the book was different but I thought that if anything, it would be deeper and more introspective.
Well, I agree with many of the more negative reviews, sadly, that this book was fairly painful to get through. The first part is that it's just not that clever. Unlike the play where are are some smart concepts that tie this to the book/movie (examples suppressed due to their spoiler nature), I just felt like this had nothing to do with the Wizard of Oz except for the names of characters. It is also such ... Read More:

. Revolutionary Road
City Travel Guides > Books > Literature and Fiction
by: Richard Yates
April 25, 2000
As several others have noted, if you like the show Mad Men you'd probably be interested in reading Revolutionary Road. However, this novel makes Mad Men look like Happy Days (but let's hope Mad Men doesn't jump the shark!) It's pretty damned dark. Written in 1961, it starkly portrays a not-so-young suburban couple completely disaffected with their lovely house, comfortable income, adoring friends, affable neighbors, easygoing bosses, unbelievably well-behaved kids, and unprecedented Postwar American peace and prosperity. (Presumably they also have problems with mid-century modern architecture, cool jazz, early rock-and-roll, and a new Alfred Hitchcock movie every year. What a drag.) So disgusted with the godawful daily grind of living the American Dream, ... Read More:

. The Catcher in the Rye

Because this is one of the most heavily reviewed books on Amazon, I will not at this late date attempt to do a comprehensive review. I'll merely focus on one reason this is such an important book and then comment on one odd yet persistent misreading of the novel.
First, this is the first novel that was written with the narrative voice of a disgruntled youth. In fact, one of the most amazing developments in the 1950s was the birth of Youth. Before the fifties there was no sharp chasm dividing young and old. There were, of course, differences between being young and being older, but the main difference was mainly that you were merely younger, not that you embraced a completely different culture. CATCHER IN THE RYE anticipated everything that was about to happen in ... Read More:

. The Beach House
City Travel Guides > Books > Literature and Fiction

For the very first time, I feel compelled to review an Amazon book because of my extreme disappointment. The excerpt made it sound like a fun, interesting read so my book group bought a bunch of hard cover copies. By the end, each of us believed we could have written it. The plot lines, dialogue, and messages were predictable cliches. There were no surprises, and we never really cared about any of the characters whose stories were tied up quickly with neat little bows. Obviously there's a market for this type of book since some people appear to have enjoyed it. From our book club to you, save your money.
