Got this book 7 days after ordering on free shipping. Not too bad, kudos to Amazon. The book is the latest version and includes updated information, though not to a very large extent.

Provide good practical information on National Parks in the region but probably a bit lacking on transportation. It would be ideal if there's listing of popular train routes as I found it in the Russia and Belarus edition.

i definitely found this product helpful and informative. ive been to amsterdam several times, but this helped with some of the outer lying areas i wanted to see a lot. also helped me find some good, off-the-beaten-path places in Amsterdam.
wish a Netherlands-Belgium guide had exisited though. that would have made this book indispensable.

I used to swear by Lonely Planet (LP) Travel Guides, but this one has too many flaws for a solid rating. Yes, the book is nicely compact and practical, with useful information on lodging, local flavor, and getting around - particularly to and from airports and bus stations. I just returned from a month's solo travel in Argentina and LP was helpful, as it doubtless was for many travelers I met holding this guide.

But: Too much information in this guide (printed in 2005) is out-dated, and at this writing prices are often 30-40% higher than stated. Also, the guide misses many hostals and other lodgings. For example, LP lists just three places to stay in LaFalda (p. 276) and in Villa del Belgrano (p. 280), but these charming ... Read More:

This guide is small enough to fit in a purse or pocket and full of lots of helpful information. I especially liked the foods section. It was easy to discretely pull it out while we were at the tapas bars and restaurants and figure out what was on the menu. My husband who knew no Spanish before our trip, used the helpful phrases verbatim, whereas I found the short dictionary in the back useful when a I couldn't remember certain words - they were almost always in there. There is even a Catalan and Basque phrase section. Highly recommended if you don't speak fluent Spanish.

I've read several books on travel writing, and have even written one myself (although my book "Crafting the Travel Guidebook" concentrates on travel books rather than articles for magazines and newspapers). "The Travel Writer's Handbook" was the classic book because it covered so many angles--research, getting assignments, what clothes and equipment to take along--and of course, how to write a compelling article. Peat O'Neal's "Travel Writing" is geared more to the beginning writer with many examples of different leads and writing exercises as well as the usual chapters on cajoling a travel editor into giving you an assignment.
