. Norway (Country Guide)

I'm still patiently waiting for a good Norway Tour Guide to be written. The Eyewitness Book is terrible. But out of a bad lot, perhaps the only one worth mentioning as worthy of taking along in a backpack is the Lonely Planet Norway.
This book isn't great; maybe it isn't even very good, but at least it does spend some effort to describe many of the amazing sites Norway has to offer. It's still quite hard for me to imagine why this great country hasn't been covered by a good book.
I for one borrowed the following books for my latest trip: Kon Tiki, The Moon is Down, A Collection of Plays by Ibsen, a Munch book, and the Lonely Planet Guide. I left the Eyewitness at home.

. Prague (City Guide)
City Travel Guides > Books > Lonely Planet

Great resource with great walking routes too (excellent directions!). When traveling I usually bring two, maybe three guide books. On this trip to Prague I brought two, and ended using this extensively, as the other book was found to be nothing more than extra weight to carry around the city.
Highly recommend this book, plus one other (not fodor's). The only minus of this book was the metro map. But other than that this book is seriously dog eared, written in, and cherised as a great memoir of my trip to Prauge.

. Czech & Slovak Republics (Country Guide)

I have used LPGs for years, and many travelers like myself are older people. Lately the LPGs font size has gotten very small and really hard to read, probably to save money.
Make the fonts readable for older people, even if the product becomes larger and a little more costly. This applies to all recent LPGs I have bought. Guides are not helpful if you have to struggle to read them. This is particularly true with maps. Last month I gave my daughter in her 40s a guide for Ireland, and her first comment was "I can hardly read it". However, your content, as usual, is exceptional.

. Vancouver (City Guide)
City Travel Guides > Books > Lonely Planet
by: John Lee
April 01, 2008
As can be expected from a Lonely Planet publication, Vancouver City Guide authored by John Lee is a resourceful, informative, and highly entertaining book. Written in lively, attractive English, this guide has everything one expects from it: background information on the place, clear division into thematic chapters, cross-references between individual sections, reference guide at the end , and - what is of utmost importance - up-to-date information on what Vancouver has to offer - from arts festivals to skiing clinics. If you are not completely satisfied with the extensive list of affordable and not-so-affordable hotels and restaurants (like I and my wife sometimes were), there are always useful internet links to various web pages provided for your convenience. ... . Travel Writing (How to)
City Travel Guides > Books > Lonely Planet
by: Janet Austin, David Else, Don George, Charlotte Hindle

I've read several books on travel writing, and have even written one myself (although my book "Crafting the Travel Guidebook" concentrates on travel books rather than articles for magazines and newspapers). "The Travel Writer's Handbook" was the classic book because it covered so many angles--research, getting assignments, what clothes and equipment to take along--and of course, how to write a compelling article. Peat O'Neal's "Travel Writing" is geared more to the beginning writer with many examples of different leads and writing exercises as well as the usual chapters on cajoling a travel editor into giving you an assignment.
This Lonely Planet compilation by Don George and others falls more into the "teach by showing" category. So whether you ... Read More:

. Belize (Country Guide)
City Travel Guides > Books > Lonely Planet

This was a good book, but nothing fabulous, however I did like it better than the Moon Handbook we bought (which I normally like more!). This is definitely geared toward the mid-range traveler, and we liked that about this book.
The prices were fairly accurate, and the food recommendations were good. We stayed at the Anchorage Resort in Caye Caulker, and it wasn't listed in the book. That is unfortunate as it's a very decent place.
Also, the beautiful casitas that are featured in the opening pages are nowhere to be found in the book. We stumbled upon them in Caye Caulker, checked them out, but found them a little too rustic for our tastes (Ignacio's Resort).
Overall, we used both of the books on our trip, and would often double-check ... Read More:
