I have lots of guidebooks - and lots of Lonely Planets, for that matter. But despite the fact that they say they are for "independent travellers", I keep finding ridiculous reviews on restaurants and hotels, to the point where I've stopped using them.

The History, Snapshot, and similar sections are great, but if you have a brain of your own - use it. Forget their restaurant and hotel recommendations, as I'm not even sure they visit the places. Sometimes they have history or comments on places that is worthwhile to read, though. All tourbooks may have these drawbacks, to be fair.

This guide is, sadly to say, disappointing considering it is a Lonely Planet publication. In planning my next trip to Rome, I thought that this might be a great book to work from, but I found it to be poorly organized and overcrowded. The authors of this book crammed way too much information into this book that it borders on unusable. There are also very few photos and what photos are provided are not very helpful.

Other Lonely Planet Guides to Rome would be a better choice than this. National Geographic Traveler Rome Guide is more insightful and will orientate the reader much better than this book will.

We got this new Lonely Planet guide just in time for our 2 week vacation last May and I can assure you : we extensively visited the Salento region, the beautiful Valle d'Ittre with the fairytale-like 'trulli' and Basilicata Matera with its 'sassi'
and always we had full and correct information about what to see, where to eat, visiting hours, etc. This guide together with Michelin map n°564 is all you need to make your visit to this part of Italy an unforgettable experience as it was for us !

I usually love the Lonely Planet series, but this book is just a listing of restaurants and hotels along the Mexican coast. There is no information about day trips away from the major cities. A friend of mine pointed out that the cover says it all - that picture could have been taken anywhere! So how did this guide earn two stars instead of one? The history section, as usual, is very good, as is the general travel information for Mexico (information about driving and using phones, etc).

This book is better than not having a travel guide, but I was really happy to have a copy of Moon Puerto Vallarta: Including the Nayarit and Jalisco Coasts (Moon Handbooks) as well. That had excellent information about small towns and other interesting ... Read More:

We're in the middle of the big decision/action to move to Florida. Leaving family, friends and relocating a small custom sign business. It's very scarey but this book has pointed out how much we will enjoy the lifestyle. Pennsylvania winters are bruital, we love tropical living, eating and all that goes with it. Swimming, diving, biking, hiking, exploring, etc... Outdoor activities. We've been down several times and this book really hits it on the head.

This is a great first edition guide to Afghanistan. For a book without much competition, LP has provided a lot more detail than they needed to to corner this market. Helpful sidebar commentaries on Hekmatyar and other political personalities in Afghanistan. The security situation has worsened since the book was written, so some of the land routes described here are no longer viable. Only complaint: the maps are full of careless errors, which are disappointing to discover stumbling around Kabul at dusk. Doesn't anyone proofread these things? Hopefully these will get ironed out in the next edition.

Unless you are going to Budapest on a long weekend, save your money and buy Lonely Planet Hungary instead. Almost all of the information is in there with additional information on nearby areas. The metro system is under going a massive renovation so check with a local TI instead of the books to find out what lines are running.
