In general, Western Australia still seems to be off the usual tourist path for most outside visitors to Australia, so there wasn't much selection when it came to finding an appropriate guidebook. For the most part, guides seemed to be too broad (covering all of Australia), or too specific (focusing just on Perth). Despite being an absolutely enormous place on its own, few choices seemed to address the state of WA.

We picked this book up out of desperation, but for the most part, it did a decent enough job. In typical Lonely Planet style, there were lots of budget options for food/accommodation and plenty of details on tours and logistics. Most of the information appeared to be accurate, and a few tips proved quite helpful.

I used to swear by Lonely Planet (LP) Travel Guides, but this one has too many flaws for a solid rating. Yes, the book is nicely compact and practical, with useful information on lodging, local flavor, and getting around - particularly to and from airports and bus stations. I just returned from a month's solo travel in Argentina and LP was helpful, as it doubtless was for many travelers I met holding this guide.

But: Too much information in this guide (printed in 2005) is out-dated, and at this writing prices are often 30-40% higher than stated. Also, the guide misses many hostals and other lodgings. For example, LP lists just three places to stay in LaFalda (p. 276) and in Villa del Belgrano (p. 280), but these charming ... Read More:

I've used Lonely Planet guides for trips a number of times, and always found them to be the best for independent travelling. After finding out that I was going to be in Namibia for an extended period of time, I immediately bought the Lonely Planet guide to Namibia/Botswana. The book is OK - fine, but is not as extensive or accurate as Lonely Planet guides I've used before. I didn't get the sense that the authors are that familiar with Namibia, at least in comparison to the authors of other Lonely Planet books. I have since bought every other guide to Namibia that is out there, and now after being in Namibia and travelling extensively for awhile, I have to admit that the Lonely Planet is the last book I choose off the shelf when planning an excursion or just general ... From a former Toronto resident (18 years to be exact), this is the guide I recommend to anyone who wants to visit the city for the first time. Easy to follow and full of ideas its a worthy guide to Canada's most awesome city. Vancouver may be beautiful and Montreal very European but Toronto is hands down the cultural and business mecca of Canada. I MISS IT!

I have lots of guidebooks - and lots of Lonely Planets, for that matter. But despite the fact that they say they are for "independent travellers", I keep finding ridiculous reviews on restaurants and hotels, to the point where I've stopped using them.

The History, Snapshot, and similar sections are great, but if you have a brain of your own - use it. Forget their restaurant and hotel recommendations, as I'm not even sure they visit the places. Got this book 7 days after ordering on free shipping. Not too bad, kudos to Amazon. The book is the latest version and includes updated information, though not to a very large extent.

Provide good practical information on National Parks in the region but probably a bit lacking on transportation. It would be ideal if there's listing of popular train routes as I found it in the Russia and Belarus edition.
