I will only say that if the author of a book about a country (or countries) demonstrates in the "Facts" section not having even looked at a map of the region, showing complete lack of knowledge of the most basic geography of what s/he claims to know and write about, what reliability can you expect from such a book?

I'll give you three examples from the "Facts on Argentina" section that reveal lack of knowledge of the region's geography and geopolitics.

1. It says: "In most of Argentina and the other Rio de la Plata countries (Uruguay and Paraguay)...". This is the grosser mistake because Paraguay is nowhere near! the Rio de la Plata river. And that is easy to see in a map of the area this ... Read More:

I've been to French Polynesia using this LP. The guidebook was helpful (all places I've stayed in were found in LP). Contact information was correct and full. But somehow almost every emotion/opinion described in my LP never matched my own :) However, one would not invent a wheel by saying that French Polynesia is not a place where standard expectations for price/performance can be met.

I've always used Lonely Planet travel guides in my travels. There's way more to NYC than a guidebook could ever cover but Lonely Planet did a great job as it always does. It's always good to know that I can trust LP to provide the basic information regarding how to get to/from the airport, transportation around the city as well as other information regarding sights and restaurants.

Guidebooks tend to be hit or miss, and Lonely Planet's tend to be especially inconsistent.

I have used the Lonely Planet guides during my trips to Morocco, Japan, Australia, and New Zealand and found those to be excellent. So when I recently went on a two-week trip to England, I picked up this guide and figured it'd be very handy.

For London, it is very useful; It lists the major sites with phone numbers and hours, has a reasonable guide to accomodation, and the maps are very well-done.

For anywhere outside London, I found this book to be less than useful. I went out to explore the New Forest and drive around Cornwall, and actually found the AA Road Atlas more useful for finding popular sites and information ... Read More:

We found this book to be very helpful and especially appreciated the Conversation/ Essentials in the rear of the book.
We only visited 'Upolu, and the guide gave us important insights about the Samoan culture and etiquette which served us well.
We stayed at Sinalei Reef Resort which we would highly recommend if you are traveling without children, and the restaurant at Coconut's Beach Club was excellent.
This guide is a must if you're going to Samoa and really want to enjoy it to it's fullest.

I really liked reading the ideas that the locals have for some offbeat sightseeing, also liked the basic instructions for the hamams (which I'd love to do, but need instructions like this in order to feel comfortable enough to try.) I also liked the locals ideas regarding the best place to try for lokum, art, dining, etc.

I Just got this book and it is page for page exactly the same is the older version. I was expecting something new from this as it was pulbished in 2008 / same - save yourself a few bucks and get the older one. If your going to Mongolia a phrase book is a must have , I lived there 1 year with my wife and learned to speak mgl w/o a phrase book. There are no english to mgl phrase books in Ulaan Baatar , only cyrillic mgl to english . So if your going , I would reccomend buying either one .
