. Bangkok (City Guide)
City Travel Guides > Books > Lonely Planet

I took this book everywhere I went. It gives you a great perspective on the things you will find, things to look out for, and a great guide on how to get to the places you want to go.
I went on business to Bangkok, and during the 3 days that I had to go around, this book helped me find those things that mattered most.
I think it is a great read for anyone who is planning to go to amazing Bangkok and it is a must when travelling around in the city. Lonely Planet books are seriously great!

. Rajasthan, Delhi & Agra (Regional Guide)
City Travel Guides > Books > Lonely Planet
by: Abigail Hole

If you're doing the 'typical' first time trip to India - the Golden Triangle - this is all you need - no reason to have a full guide to India since the south is completely different from the north - carrying a full guide to India if you're just going to Delhi, The Taj Mahal, and say Jaipur, is like carrying a guide to to Poland for a trip to France - I guess that's why Lonely Planet decided to publish this concise guide.
Traveling to India takes a lot of preparation and you discover you forgot to do half the preparation you needed when you get there - this book helps full the gaps, prepare you for the shocks, gives great connection information to the often confusing and chaotic, but surprisingly pretty well ran Indian railways.

. Hong Kong & Macau (City Guide)
City Travel Guides > Books > Lonely Planet

I have visited both Hong Kong and Macau over the years and always turn back to this guide for a reliable reference, particularly for the maps and transport info, as their are many transport options here. There are some mistakes--some significant--as other reviewers have pointed out, but 99% of the content is useful and accurate, with insightful background information and great restaurant, sights, and outings recommendations.
All guidebooks are a snapshot in time--this book is no exception. Hong Kong and Macau are fast-paced and therefore always changing (part of the allure...), so the accommodation and eating sections are bound to change.
The pullout map has a few errors, but can generally be relied upon for getting ... Read More:

. Colombia (Country Guide)
City Travel Guides > Books > Lonely Planet

just got back from colombia. i brought the Bradt guide and my friend brough the lonely planet. the Bradt is horrendous. both are weak, but the LP is by far the better of the two.
the most important thing about a guide, in a place like colombia is safety. the LP recommendeds hotels in the area by the cathedral in medellin. no one happened to go there or check with the police, quite obviously, because it's one of the sketchiest neighborhoods i've ever seen, and I grew up in brooklyn! transexual hookers who rob people with knives on the blocks all around it. one simple check with the police and they will tell you it's a "critical zone."
It also mentions how safe a city it is. i really wonder how much research was done. the day we got there ... Read More:

. Tibet (Country Guide)
City Travel Guides > Books > Lonely Planet
by: Bradley Mayhew

I look for two things in guide book: narratives that enhance my understanding of the place I am visiting and accurate practical information. This review focuses on the shortcomings of the narrative and ends with comments on the practical aspects of the Lonely Planet Tibet (7th Edition).
The historical discussion of Liberation on pages 38-9 illustrates narrative problems which continue throughout the book. (The liberation section should be accessible on the amazon.com main web page for the Lonely Planet Tibet book.)
GENOCIDE: In the first paragraph of the section the author states that " `liberation' led to 1.2 million Tibetans deaths". This information first appeared in the early 1980s along with accusations of genocide. ... Read More:
