. Seattle (City Guide)
City Travel Guides > Books > Lonely Planet
by: Becky Ohlsen

My wife and I have traveled the world to all but four countries using Lonely Planet and as always Lonely Planet is the only book to travel with. A bit of information on Seattle travel expenses. For a USA city, Seattle is very expensive to visit (about 38% more than the average USA city). We have friends of 40 years who relocated to Seattle and they too say it is expensive. Eating for two in a standard lunch restaurant is going to cost $60 (with gratuity).
I spent two months researching Seattle rooms (talking with hotel concierges and club member services). All room rates are hiked 40% for the summer months (May-mid Sept). All the rooms are small in square footage - similiar to NYC. The lodging with the largest rooms is Springhill Suites ... Read More:

. Lonely Planet Dominican Republic (Country Guide)
City Travel Guides > Books > Lonely Planet
by: Gary Chandler, Liza Prado
October 01, 2005
I bought this book for a trip I'm going on next week. While I have not used it 'in country' yet, I have traveled to many other places, using a Lonely Planet guide as my bible. I find them better than the competitor's guides primarily for their organization, and ease of finding the information you need, fast. The 'Sleeping' sections allow you to easily choose the best hotel option that fits you and your trip, and the 'Getting there & away' section not only tells you where transport is located, but the price, and importantly, the duration. Having this book in my hand next week will allow me to make easy, quick decisions, and concentrate on the most important thing - having fun.

. Mongolia (Country Guide)

I ordered this 2008 edition of Lonely Planet to get some info about Mongolia and there are not many guides for a solo traveller in this region.
It seems most people visit Mongolia in groups which can really be off turning for those who want to see the richness of the culture instead of a staged production.
I haven't decided whether this has become like the productions in Bhutan for only the wealthy tourists who travel in groups.

. Amsterdam (City Guide)

A bit disappointed in the useablility of the book. I've used many Lonely Planet books before, and generally like them. The layout of the book leaves a bit to be desired. The descriptions of attractions and restaurants are pretty good, but where the book falls down is that then you need to look up the map the attraction is on (at the back of the book), then look in the index of the map (behind the map), and then back to the map to find the attraction/restaurant.
It would have been much better if they put those references beside the descriptions as well as the index of the map.
In addition, being in the Netherlands, Windmills are nice attraction, and the book said that we had to go on an excursion to near by towns to find Windmills. ... Read More:

. Greek Islands (Regional Guide)
City Travel Guides > Books > Lonely Planet
by: Paul Hellander
March 01, 2008
The media has recently reported that many travel books are now written by people who don't actually travel to the places they review. While using this book in Greece I had the nagging suspicion I must have bought one of those books.
For example, the book reviews several beaches on Patmos but doesn't mention a single hotel around Grikos Beach, even though there are at least half a dozen places to stay. Also, I'd expect a book to do more than just list the beaches on an island--but to let us know which ones are crowded, which are nearly inaccessible, and which beaches are hidden "gems". The books gives no such information, leaving you to waste time finding it all out yourself.
Also, the book doesn't indicate which beaches can be walked ... Read More:

. Taiwan (Country Guide)
City Travel Guides > Books > Lonely Planet
by: Robert Kelly

With international travel booming, the travel book industry churns out books like this, short on historical perspective, long on mother hen nagging, and eager to show political correctness at every turn. Worst of all is the hype. When are these people going to figure out that we buy the book because we're Going To The Country? We don't have to be Sold On The Country. Let me now join the international call for a moratorium on the following words in travel books: vibrant, boasts, awesome, enjoy, proudly.
If you think I'm exaggerating about Mother Hen, just turn to page 23. There, you are advised not to leave home without tissues or tampons or shoes or clothing. It's hard to pinpoint the exact time that travel book companies got the idea that the bulk of their ... Read More:
