I purchased Michelin Battle of Normandy Map No.102 to help us guide ourselves around Normandy this spring while looking for war ruins such as bunkers, and memorials and cemetaries. The map is very detailed and was excellent for planning the trip before arriving in France. However, after driving in Normandy, I was startled that I could actually depend on this map for navigation! Even though it is a map from the 40's, many things have not changed in Normandy! While some cemetaries that were identified on the maps are no longer US cemetaries (for example, we exhumed our dead from a current German cemetary and reburied them in the US cemetary near Omaha beach), practically every other feature identified on the map is accurate. Bot this to plan a 3 wk. car trip to Tuscany, Umbria & Lazio & brought it along for using during the entire trip. Absolutely fantastic! Even when we missed a turn because a road sign was misplaced or missing, we could still figure out where we were and how to get to our final destination easily with this map. Michelin's maps always work superbly for us, and that's all we use whenever we're doing a car trip on our own for countries they map.

This is an excellent and highly detailed driving map. My only negative comment is that it is so detailed, a magnifying glass may be needed to read certain roadway areas.

Maps are good, but could be a little more complete. Found a typo or two on it, but worked for me to navigate to more obscure parts of Alsace.

I have been using green (and often red) Michelin guides for almost 50 years. For any area in the world they cover, they are clearly the best guide books available, with some caveats: one must have a good general education, and one must be able to read a very condensed map--skills many young Americans sadly lack. With those skills, however, as usual this new edition of the USA book is superb. Unlike almost all other travel books, Michelin offers clear value judgments, rankings, of sights. I have found over the years that I almost always agree with Michelin opinions. Because I like the series so much, and this book is very good, I give it 5 stars. The Michelin Green Guide is still the best. The history and tours will turn you into your own expert guide. The star system lets you select the best spots to visit within your time frame. It will fit in your pocket, but it is not a light weight guide. Durable and easy to use, it is a classic.

This atlas is a great value at $16.32, but it suffers from very bad design. Here are the design failures I've experienced:

* This is actually five separate atlases jammed together into one book. Each of the five has its own scale, its own index, and--unfathomably--it's own LEGEND. The legend for Germany is different from the legend for Belgium. There are more than SIXTEEN PAGES of legends--eleven at the front, five scattered through the indexes, plus "special symbols" identified on pages XXII and XXIII.

* The only broad-scale map showing all of the atlas's area doesn't show a single road. There is no all-encompassing map connecting the roads across the five independent maps. If you're driving from one country to another, ... Read More:

As a history professor for twenty years I always required students on my England and Austria overseas summer semesters to purchase the appropriate Michelin Green Guide in order to learn the basic history and cultural specialties of the cities we lived in and visited. The guides pack a great deal of accurate detail and good maps into a reasonably small format that is easy to carry in a backpack or tote and is priced well for students and the general tourist.
