. Among the Believers: An Islamic Journey
City Travel Guides > Books > Middle East
by: V.S. Naipaul
July 12, 1982
This book is remarkable in the relevance of the authors experiences in the early 80s to the present day context. The author visits a cross section of countries in the Islamic world , moving from revolution in Iran to foment in South East Asia. Its a great book to get a fair understanding of Islam in a political context as envisioned by citizens in the countries that he visits. The author starts of with Iran and comes across a cross section of individuals who are hopeful and disillusioned by what the revolution has delivered. The most remarkable is his visit to the city of Qom (the Oxford of Persia), in the month of Ramadan. His meetings with leading theologians, one of whom personally shot the Shah's prime minister lends a touch of the macabre. ... Read More:

. Revenge: A Story of Hope
City Travel Guides > Books > Middle East
by: Laura Blumenfeld
April 01, 2003
You fool; you insensitive--no, malevolently cruel fool: You can wax philosophic and even have a point. But there are times when such an intellectual exercise is inhumane to the extreme. This woman is writing about something intensely personal, about a loved one who was targeted for death. Your dragging politics into this is ugly and self-centered. Yes, YOU are self-centered and self-righteous, not the author. You are also half-baked; you didn't even read the summary of the book right here on Amazon. You pathetically lazy pseudo-intellectual. If you had read the summary, let alone the book (imagine that), you would in fact have found that the author forced herself to overcome her pain and proceeded to familiarize herself up close and personal with ... I like the topic for the book. But the writing is very sketchy.
SOmetimes the book reads like a magazine article thats over written and padded. Other times the book reads like a boring diary. Basically its a mess. Most of of the writing has this detached mediocre dull tone that reminds me of books Ive read from intelligence officers. I wonder if the author is an intelligence officer of some kind.

. My Journey in Mystic China: Old Pu's Travel Diary
City Travel Guides > Books > Middle East
by: John Blofeld
March 29, 2008
Wow! What a great book. Now, I admit that I am biased toward anything John Blofeld writes. I first used his translation of the Yijing when I began studying baguazhang 25 years ago. I still prefer his translation. Blofeld was determined to write one book in Chinese, and he did...this one. It was his last book. Daniel Reid has produced a very readable English translation. It has the feel of a Blofeld book. Buy this book, sit back, and read about China in the 1930s and 40s from the eyes of an Englishman gone native. Blofeld's Chinese name was Lao Pu or Old Pu. His adventures are always fascinating, his attempts to understand the tao and Buddhism are often enlightening, and some events are just down-right funny. Highly recommended! I only wish I could read it ... Read More:
