I envy him. I envy his travels and his writing. For me Bouvier writes the best travel novels. It s something different. He doesn't describe the country. he simply lives country's life. Stays somewhere in Anatolia for a month, then suddenly one day decides it is time. Time to go, time to travel.

"Kisses From a Distance" was recommended by a friend and I'm thankful to her for that! It's a very readable memoir, touched with humor and filled with first-hand stories handed down to Raff Ellis. His narrative flows easily and the photos add much interest. I drew many connections to my own Irish great-grandparents' experience. They immigrated to NYC during the Irish Potato Famine. I just wish I had the treasure trove of letters and photos that Raff has. They are priceless. All Americans are descended from immigrants, so we can all identify with "Kisses From a Distance," no matter our ancestors' ethnicity. Kudos to Raff for this labor of love.

Great book. It was such an easy ready. To pack up your life and leave your comfort zone is amazing, but to include one husband and two children - now THAT's courageous! I enjoyed her insightfullness and her wit. I read her words and I saw myself stomping the "cucarachas" with them, I was with her running down the insidious lecher, and I was with her at the beach trying to blend in (or not) :-) I really enjoyed your words! Encore Encore Encore!

This is a very-useful general reference for the foreign business person making his or her first visit to the kingdom and interacting with Saudi hosts or counterparts. Descriptive data are fairly accurate as of the year of publication (2008) of this revised edition. Good coverage of business practices, etiquette, customs and standards among urban Saudi business classes and officials.

My major criticism is the quite-small size of the type, which makes reading this book a mental and visual ordeal after a few hours.

Recommend this book as a convenient and relevant "get smart fast" basic reference.

This is a useful accompaniment to any trip to Beirut, and at the moment is about the only guidebook available. American embassy staff commend it. Be forewarned, however, that my one attempt to use the maps led to a memorable adventure with a series of Beirut cab drivers, one of whom did eventually find Centrale, the restaurant I sought, but no thanks to the book.

For anyone who loves to travel to strange and distant lands - or wishes they could - this may be the quintessential travel book. Vita Sackville-West was a great friend of Virginia Woolf, and shared her gift for superb storytelling as well as her love of the language.

From the opening page, where she describes and beckons to fellow travelers, through the wild ride across the Yemeni sands and the drive over the mountains of Persia, the reader is enthralled.

She opens the door to travel in the 'teens, when a journey like this was truly arduous - and yet you are quite certain she always looked fabulous and was witty - at least after she'd had her tea.

It is a great regret that this book is out of print, as it is such a treasure.
