I never go to Israel without two of these. I am a map-o-phile and personally have many maps of Israel and Jerusalem. Some are in English and some are in Hebrew. This is the ONE map of Jerusalem that I highly reccomend to those who visit Israel with us. It's laminated, accordion-fold and easy to read.

As for the negative review, I understand the statement about the complexity, however there is no way to have less content with an accordion fold. I would suggest a larger scale map for planning at home and the hotel, and use the StreetWise map for walking.

This book is filled with the knowledge of vast experience and travel. If you want a book that doesn't just give the religiously naive and superstitious what they want to hear (like so many do), then this is your book. Excellent in several ways.

This is a really good book if you are going to travel to Israel.
I found so much to help me. I have now taken the trip and am going
over some of the things written. It was surprising because I was able to meet the author before the trip and he gave me many pointers. He is remarkable.

Although Lonely Planet guides are generally good, this one was a major disappointment. It has a very, very one sided pro-Arab and anti-Israel spin to it. Many Jewish areas are glossed over and not given enough detail. Jewish sites in the territories are completely ignored. Much time, space, and detail is given over to Palestinian areas and which Palestinian charities to contribute to, etc. and where to buy Palestinian handicrafts that will benefit refugees...etc, etc. ad nausuem, ad infinitum. Israel is a Jewish country and that is what should be emphasized in a guidebook. Sadly this was not the case. Incidentally the previous edition of this book by Andrew Humphries was better. Maybe I should write my own book?

We used this book on our travels to the coast of THailand and stayed at Koi Samui. I wished that the book had revealed more about Koi Samui and hope that future editions would add more than two pages of coverage. Regardless, DK always is first rate in pictures and explaining the life of Thailand which is a beautiful country.

I read this book because I enjoyed another book, Whoredom in Kimmage, by the same author. This one, though very different, is every bit as excellent. I have done business in several developing countries, including Egypt, and I found Mahoney extremely well informed. Her descriptions are surprisingly on the mark for a person who only spent a total of three months in the country. The book is full of history, detail, and fascinating information about the Egyptians and their culture. The writing is beautiful. It's also very colorful and funny. But for me, the most moving part of the book is the story that lies at its heart: the tender and mutually respectful friendship the author finds with a Nubian man who accepted her desire to row on the river ... If you're planning on touring Jordan independently, then this is the book for you. It also is very helpful in identifying activities and tours of interest (especially activities off the beaten trail), and it guides you to reputable local tour companies.

My Jordan tour is not until December, 2008. However, I feel very confident that I have chosen the best hotels and activities within my budget.

This is not a guide book - it's not about places, good restaurants and value hotels.

This is about the people of Egypt, their history, their culture and how they think.

As such, it is a much more interesting read than any guide book.
