. Once Upon a Country: A Palestinian Life
City Travel Guides > Books > Middle East
by: Sari Nusseibeh
April 29, 2008
This is a memoir written by a professor of philosophy who is also the current president of Al Quds university in East Jerusalem.
After getting through his father's history in the early chapters, University professor Sari Nusseibeh realizes the central problem between the Israeli and Palestinian coexistence: neither sides understanding of the other side. It takes him meeting Israeli students at college, and flying on an Israeli ariline, and teaching at Hebrew University before he begins to see the similarities between the two. And thats where he evolves his ideas about peace.
A central concept of his is that both sides are allies, NOT enemies. He even goes as far to say that the two are more like allies than the united ... Read More:

. Frommer's Turkey (Frommer's Complete)
City Travel Guides > Books > Middle East
by: Lynn A. Levine
September 02, 2008
I always use Frommers books for my vacations, but I have to tell you that this book is the biggest waste of money I have ever spent on Amazon or any other book store for that matter. The author obviously has not done her job here. Be careful, you just might wind up in Iraq if you follow her guides. This book is very vague and confusing throughout. You can not trust her hotel recommendations. How in the world can she justify putting Apricot hotel in Istanbul in this book. This guy is a crook. This hotel should be taken out of this book completely for it's opportunistic behavior. Have you ever heard the phrase BAIT AND SWITCH? BUYER BEWARE? Well, that should be the heading for all her recommendations if they are all like the Apricot hotel in Istanbul. My advise ... Read More:

. Insight Guides Turkey
City Travel Guides > Books > Middle East
from: Insight Guides
2008-06
This book is unmistakably useful as a guide for tourists visiting Turkey, but it will be of value also to all of us with Turkish friends. Turks are Middle Easterners, but not like most of their neighbours. This book sweeps away suppositions and errors and presents the Turks' history, culture, beliefs and ways in a clear and readable manner.

. Arabian Sands (Penguin Classics)
City Travel Guides > Books > Middle East
by: Wilfred Thesiger
January 02, 2008
I live most of the year in Saudi Arabia and saw this book at a local bookstore. I was attracted by the cover, reviews, inside photography, and the author's opening comments. I purchased it hoping I would get a greater understanding of the world I live in before the influence of Western luxuries/conveniences. I also thought it would be an enjoyable true-life adventure story.
Thesiger was drawn to the bedu setting from of his disdain for the onslaught of technological progression which has been infiltrating every corner of the earth. And no doubt, I benefited from the book with learning more about the bedu culture/mentality as well as their relationship with each other and other Arabs and the degree of attention that they gave to Islam (or "cultural" Islam, not ... . Israel Map by Cartographia (Country Map)
City Travel Guides > Books > Middle East
by: Cartographia
April 01, 2005
Bought this map and used it for a weeklong trip to Israel.
The negatives:
-The paper quality is poor.
-The street detail is pretty low for practical street navigation.
-Even though the map does have city maps (Tel Aviv, Jerusalem, Eilat but no Haifa) they only cover the city centers.
- The back of the map is wasted with a huge street index - this could have been used in a better fashion.
- I found the free map that I got from Budget a more useful tool for overall navigation, since it contained all the info I need for highway driving in a more compact package.
The positives:
- It is not expensive.
- Is ok if you are only going to drive on major intercity roads.
