I read this book 6 years ago. It made me laugh and really appreciate the author and his adventures.
I shall read it again. It's one I saved just for that purpose.
I really recommend this book for anyone interested in the Yemeni culture or just for the appreciation of this author's wit and writing skills.

I am planning a trip to Jordan in the fall and bought The Rough Guide to begin planning. It contains a lot of very useful information, as well as a nice photo section at the beginning to get you excited about your visit. I regularly use both Lonely Planet and The Rough Guide as I find they have a lot of the same information but different pluses and minuses (for example, I find I have to flip around a bit more in The Rough Guide to get prices and other details but they often have some better background information). Anyway, since I haven't traveled yet, I cannot comment on the accuracy of the information but it has certainly been useful in my planning.

Byron had an hysterical knack for seeing right into the souls of the various persons he met on his journeys...it didn't matter who the person was or of what ethnic group or nationality - none were spared the naked opinions of Mr. Byron, and the result is perhaps one of the best books I have read in the last decade. The serious looks at the peoples and places of a part of the world that remains today mysterious and troubled are enlightening when seen in the historical flow. Byron was interested in a type of Islamic architecture that through his writing became known to the West and I hope more appreciated in the lands he traveled.

I am currently deployed to Kabul and after reading and reviewing many guides and books this is the best guide and historic account I have found. Another great book is Taliban by Rashid.

Very few images, all of the typical touristy things. Map has only the main streets named, and only a small segment of Istanbul at that. Save your money and get the D&K guide instead.
