In addition to providing me with the basics of where to stay, where to go, etc. RG gave me all of the cultural/historical information I needed to have a deeper understanding of Egyptian culture and better enjoy my trip. The enhanced discussion of "baksheesh" was particularly useful!!

I loved this book. It provided a wonderfully written, well-paced, well-researched and incredibly entertaining account of modern day Iran and the historical events that it made it the way it is. I couldn't put it down.

I own several books on learning Hebrew - and I didn't find this one very helpful (read: waste of money). If you want to really learn the language well and quickly, try ALEPH ISN'T TOUGH, by Linda Motzkin. It is in workbook format, will teach you how to write cursive AND script, and uses biblical phrases to teach the language. The book also offers and excellent chart on all of the letters (both cursive and script), as well as vowels - well worth keeping long after you complete the book for later reference. This book is a great primer, preparing the student to move on to studying either biblical OR contemporary Hebrew. It allowed me to skip a first level Hebrew class and go straight into level 2. Strongly recommended.

This is a gem of a travel book. I didn't think a book set in Yemen would be this interesting or entertaining. I was pleasantly surprised by the author's adventures and his attention to detail on his journey. Highly recommended.

Even though i'm doing a lot of research on the internet regarding my upcoming trip to Egypt, i've learned a lot of things in that book that i hadn't found out on the net. The book is not expensive and totally worth it.

Istanbul (City Guide)

This book is more a map, a formal guide what you can find in Istanbul.When your goal is to see as much as possible at the city, this guide is for you.
But if you want to get information about Topkapi palace harem and its habitants, its better to look for more informal guide with stories.
Descriptions of objects are very short, mostly connected to architecture facts and dates. No soul of this big, various and interesting city. Only information.

This is a great first edition guide to Afghanistan. For a book without much competition, LP has provided a lot more detail than they needed to to corner this market. Helpful sidebar commentaries on Hekmatyar and other political personalities in Afghanistan. The security situation has worsened since the book was written, so some of the land routes described here are no longer viable. Only complaint: the maps are full of careless errors, which are disappointing to discover stumbling around Kabul at dusk. Doesn't anyone proofread these things? Hopefully these will get ironed out in the next edition.
