This is a gem of a travel book. I didn't think a book set in Yemen would be this interesting or entertaining. I was pleasantly surprised by the author's adventures and his attention to detail on his journey. Highly recommended.

I loved this book. It provided a wonderfully written, well-paced, well-researched and incredibly entertaining account of modern day Iran and the historical events that it made it the way it is. I couldn't put it down.

Judging a book by its cover is usually a dangerous practice. However, Ball and his publisher have created a book that is as attractive within as without. From the standpoint of layout, the most striking feature is that the colorful plates are complemented by text pages of approximately the same weight. This feature avoids the awkwardness often found in softbound texts interspersed with photographic sections.
The glossary is adequate, if not thorough, allowing for armchair reading by dilletantes in most cases. However, one will occasionally confront within a definition presented an unfamiliar word not elsewhere defined.

I buy their guides to wherever I go if its available. The color photos, maps are fantastic compared to the other text driven guides. I still get another guide just to compare because they tend to recommend things and places differently from each other.

Wow! What a great book. Now, I admit that I am biased toward anything John Blofeld writes. I first used his translation of the Yijing when I began studying baguazhang 25 years ago. I still prefer his translation. Blofeld was determined to write one book in Chinese, and he did...this one. It was his last book. Daniel Reid has produced a very readable English translation. It has the feel of a Blofeld book. Buy this book, sit back, and read about China in the 1930s and 40s from the eyes of an Englishman gone native. Blofeld's Chinese name was Lao Pu or Old Pu. His adventures are always fascinating, his attempts to understand the tao and Buddhism are often enlightening, and some events are just down-right funny. Highly recommended! I ordered this book with some skepticism as i did not want to be drawm into another dreary account of the significance of the temples. I was pleasantly surprised to find this book very readable and throught provoking. Granted that throughout the book you are subject to the author's bias in interpretation (which he is forthright about) but it is an excellent way to add depth to a visit to the temples and as a starting point for further research if one so desires. Personally for me being a hindu, it was fascinating to discover the similarities between ancient egypt and our own vedic past which I am ashamed to admit I was rather clueless about!!

I speak several language and have a language identifier (French: 3 & a 2++). I bought this as a place to start & I am impressed with the quality and functionality of this book. It comes with an audio cd, a culture guide, cards/pages with the phrases covered in the CD, a culture guide and a laminted pocket card of all of the phrases.
It all fits neatly into this waterproof little binder that fits easily inside your ACU side cargo pocket. The CD is well done as is the book and it is easy to take with you. I have already started chatting with the local nationals here in Bagram that I come in contact with. No cosmopolitan musings about the relative merits of multiple swank laden hotels and resorts. No pointless stereotypical dwellings on the geo-politics of Saddam Hussein vs Khomeini. No histrionic rubbish about Thermopylae. Not a dull moment in the whole book.

This book truly made me re-think the way I view my heritage as a kid of Iranian descent. All the dull crud my parents and grandparents mentioned suddenly emerged from the pages of Mr Elliot's book, burnished anew to a dazzling sheen. I cannot recommend this book more highly for its insight into Iranian culture and the Persian civilisation(s) on which it's built.

Truly a timely and poetic read:)
