This book is fabulous. I work as a travel nurse and recently spent 6 1/2 months in Maine. I had never been there before and spent several hours at the bookstore going through various Maine travel books before settling on this one. I certainly made the right choice. It was a wonderful resource. I spent hours reviewing the information in this book over the course of my time in Maine. I plan to go back to Maine next summer and will take my book right back with me. The information on shops, restaurants and points of interest was valuable and very accurate.

I'm not usually a big fan of guide books. But this one helped immensely on my trip. It is so accurate in its advice that I often felt the strange feeling of walking in the footsteps of the author. For example, it describes a hidden path at a lookout point, and sure enough its there. Or when it says that a parking lot is going to be full at 8 am in the morning; it will be.

But the most valuable information to me was the "Highlights" page at the beginning of each section. Here the author tells you the "must see parts of the island." In my experience he is right every time. For example, I never would have thought to visit Limahuli Botanical Gardens. But it turned out to be one of the best parts of the trip.

This is an excellent,dependable resource for this area. The guide is easy to read, practical, informative and inclusive. I was pleased with the recommendations that I pursued.

I can't quite put my finger on it, except to say that in my travels around New England I've found this to be somewhat less useful than the Moon guidebooks for N.H. & Maine. (The Moon guidebooks for Maine by Kathleen Brandes are just terrific, in many trips to Kennebunkport & Portland I've found them to be incredibly useful, & would give them 5 stars).

Like another reviewer said, this 2nd (2001) edition is somewhat dated. I actually have the 1998 1st edition, but from other comments, it doesn't sound like they did a lot of updating between those editions.

HOWEVER: This book is chock-full of detailed & useful info. that you won't find in the more generalized travel books, like Frommer's, that cover all of New ... Read More:

I have used Moon Handbooks for all of my serious vacation planning. I have used my Colorado book over and over again for numerous areas throughout the state. I like to do a fair amount of research before going on trips and while this may not always provide the degree of depth I'm looking for, it provides you with links to further information so you can get to where you want to be - that's all one can really expect a good travel guide to do. The volume of information in this guide is staggering. I find it to be entertainingly written, with just enough "off the beaten path" material to keep it slightly more interesting than the average tour book. I also own the Pennsylvania Handbook by the same author, and I'm continually amazed by her ability to search out the odd little museums and restaurants that really make a destination unique. In Maryland, you can polka the night away after visiting an out-of-the-way military code museum. And, I enjoy the sly humor that kind of sneaks up on you: "In the film Star Wars, Luke was misdirected when he was told to beware The Dockside. This friendly, casual restaurant...is a good place for inexpensive meals from breakfast ($5) through dinner ($6-9). Lots of Crisfield watermen eat here." (from the Eastern Shore section). Like all Moon Handbooks, this one makes the ordinary come alive, covers the whole area extremely well, and is fun to read.

Compared to the 6 other Moon Handbooks I have (and have used extensively with many recommendations given to others), this is the least informative and I'm kind of surprised about that since it's focused on a very specific region of New York State. The New York State Moon Handbook gave far better more information on this region than this book did and I'm glad I had both of them on my trip. The book isn't a complete dud though and it certainly beats the travel book published by the nationally known auto travel club.
