We just got back fron a two week trip to the Hawaiian Islands. We visited three islands, Kau'ai, Oahu, and Hawai'i. The book proved to be a valuable tool to have during our visit. I'm not sure that I always agreed with the author's opinion on some things, but overall most of his tips were good ones. I paid $11 for the book and considering the cost of the trip, having this book or one like it is very worthwhile.

So far, I had never bought a tourist guide. Maybe it's because I never traveled before just for the pleasure of traveling, for the excitement associated to discovering new people, new places, new cultures. When I decided to spend my week of vacation last August in Charleston, South Carolina, I supposed that, to make the most of it, I should get a guide. After taking a look at the different guides of South Carolina and Charleston in my local bookstore, reading the online reviews at Amazon.com, and listening to the advices of Dary, a good friend and a seasoned traveler, I decided for Moon's South Carolina. This is a good guidebook. The opening information for each area was well-written. It lists things to do and see in a general vicinity with dates, times, and costs for each. The index is superior to other guides we have used. Most of the restaurant recommendations were great with one notable exception in Sandwich, MA and that place was just weird. The binding allowed an entire section to be carefully removed to carry around in pocket or purse without lugging the whole book. We will look at Moon Handbooks for all of our future travels.

I have always found the Moon Handbooks to be good reference material. I had the 2001 version of the same book but of course things change in a few years time. The current version is about half the size of the old one and I have not had the time to discern the difference in the two books. Perhaps the new one is more of an abridged version. In any event it is still a very useful tool and will be used in our upcoming trip to that area.

This was published in May 2007, and I consulted it during my stay in June and July. I can vouch for its accuracy. The strength of the book lies in the fact that as far as I can tell from the acknowledgements (worth reading for their charm), the whole was written by a young American ex-pat, Camille DeAngelis, and therefore has the consistency of a single p-o-v that reflects her encyclopedic knowledge, tempered enthusiasm, and evident stamina. While the guide is markedly less comprehensive on history, sightseeing, and local lore than competing guides, it is very thorough on practicalities such as civilized accomodation, decent eats, bus routes, and ATMs. I would use this to work out the nitty-gritty of planning the details of staying once you figure out ... I've always enjoyed the eclectic nature of Moon guides and the Florida Gulf Coast guide is no exception. In hind sight I should have looked for an everglades guide but this one sufficed. A lot of the information is now dated because the last year's hurricane season. the biggest problem I ran into was places either being closed or having reduced hours. I also found the organization of the Everglades informations a bit scattered. Still I'd recommend this guide.

I first bought this book a couple of months ago and was really pleased at first. It seemed to give good information on a variety of areas and gave recommendations of things to do that were probably off of the beaten path. Based on the book I drew up a list of the places in Ecuador that I would like to visit and laid the book down for a little bit until I had firmed up my plans some more.

On picking up the book again I started to see some of the glaring errors I had missed in my first reading. There are very few maps of the cities that are spoken of in the book so it doesn't really do you any good to know an address if you have no idea where in the city it is. I have just returned from a trip to both Vietnam and Cambodia. Based on the multitude of inaccuracies in this book, I would not recommend it. I bought the book because I wanted to try Moon Handbooks. Typically, I stick to Frommers or Lonely Planet.

Of course, all travel handbooks are going to have their share of inaccuracies as prices change, businesses open/close, etc between the time of writing, its eventual publishing, and the buyer's trip to the country. In addition, Vietnam, Cambodia, and Laos are changing rapidly and thus frusterate any travel writer's ability to fully and accurately cover the countries.
