I also just got back from Cuba, and I couldn't disagree with Cecil Fox's January 17 review more. Baker is a very good writer who's done extensive research, and the book is pleasurable to read. He makes his love for the place palpable without sparing the reader the frustration a visitor/observer often feels. Other travelers staying where I did ended up borrowing this guidebook for its richness of detail and background that theirs (Lonely Planet) lacked. I liked it so much I'm buying another- I had to leave my copy on the plane as we were without licenses, and afraid of tipping-off US immigration.
That said, I wish it were updated a bit. The million bicycles Baker writes about aren't there en masse anymore, and Dulce Maria's was fun but ... Read More:

Trip to wine country comes up in September. However, having been to the area many times before I was curious to see what new wineries the book listed and some of the things wineries are delving into beside great wine. Balsamic vinegar has become a hot commodity and I look forward to sampling some at the Terraces Winery in Rutherford. Will update review upon my return in October.

Obviously, from the reviews here, people want/expect different things from their guidebooks but my wife and I have done a lot of traveling to a lot of places and found this one of the best we've ever used.

This book covers everything a traveler could need -- where to stay, where to eat, where to shop; and whatever your taste in activities, from museums to water sports, from golf to horticulture, it's well covered here, with full details of the where, the when, the phone number, and any little quirky info like "avoid Tuesdays," or "be aware of the riptides." (Is there anybody out there who WOULDN'T want to know there are riptides?)

It's also very comprehensive -- not too surprising, of course, when it only has to cover ... Read More:

Ms. Bird has done a wonderful job of covering New York City and state in a single volume. She manages to pack a ton of information between the covers of this book and includes a surprising level of detail on many out of the way places that other authors would have missed.

I should also complement the Moon editorial staff for keeping this massive volume well-organized and flowing right along.

In sum, this is an excellent pickup for anyone looking to familiarize themselves with NY state!

I found the book to be very helpful. When I travel I like to go and hang out with the locals and be a part of the scene and with this guide book I was able to do just that. This book is not only good for those like me but it also gives some great listings for the all inclusive resorts. I found that the author was very knowlegable of her families home land. I only wished I would have had more time to see other parts of the island. I stayed in
Santo Dominco and had a wonderful time. If you get a chance one should have dinner at Coco's Restaurant. I had a great time with the locals and the food was unbelievable.
