. Death Perception (Psychic Eye Mysteries, Book 6)
City Travel Guides > Books > Mystery and Thrillers
by: Victoria Laurie
September 02, 2008
I have loved the Abby Cooper series since "Pyschic Eye" first came out. I love Dutch and Abby's relationship and the relationship she has with the other characters. However, this entry seemed to start slower than previous entries and I had a hard time getting into the flow of the book. I don't know if it was because we were in a new location and many core characters were not there until either later in the book or not at all. Once Dutch disappeared, then things seemed to get rolling and the book picked up pace. However, with this came the thing that I love about the books, Dutch and Abby working together to solve the case. And like another reader, I wish that Dutch and Abby had more dialog at the end of the book.
Still, fans ... Read More:

. Careless in Red: A Novel
City Travel Guides > Books > Mystery and Thrillers
by: Elizabeth George
May 06, 2008
Have read all of Ms George's Inspector Lynley novels. Thought the opening of this book was brilliant. We knew it was Tommy and wondered what happened to him. He's back. The parts with him and Barbara Havers were so welcomed as were Insp Hannaford and her family. The rest of the characters in this book were downers. There was no reason to smile about anything else.
Most of the time the prose was confusing and spoken in parables. The conclusion was most disappointing and frustrating. I am not looking for the Book of Life but I do like conclusions that explain motives and actions.
Will donate this book to the library.

. Laughter of Dead Kings (Vicky Bliss, No. 6)
City Travel Guides > Books > Mystery and Thrillers
by: Elizabeth Peters
August 26, 2008
To have another Vicky Bliss book at last is a real treat, as is meeting again so many of the characters from the previous books in the series.

Spoilers
However, because I've waited such a long time for this book and spent a lot of that time trying to figure out the promised connection between John and the Emersons, I suppose any possible denouement would have fallen short of my expectations. I had hoped that the connection would prove to be through Sethos (thief to thief, as it were) and couldn't help feeling disappointed when it wasn't. I also felt that both Vicky and John had less time center stage than I would have liked and that the pace of the book was less exciting than that of some of the earlier ... Read More:

. The Dangerous Days of Daniel X
City Travel Guides > Books > Mystery and Thrillers
by: James Patterson
July 21, 2008
I used to enjoy Krispy Kreme donuts. I used to enjoy James Patterson. For similar reasons, I forswore them both some time ago.
Patterson produces novels at nearly the same rate Krispy Kreme produces donuts and like the donuts, there's almost no nutritional value. Over time, I forget how vacuous they are and think, "Why did I give these things up, they LOOK good". The next day however, suffering from aesthetic remorse, I renew my vow of abstinence.
"The Dangerous Days of Daniel X" is an example of how dependent Patterson has become on the contributions of "co-writers" (I suspect these "co-writers" are the ACTUAL creators while Mr. Patterson does little more than attach his name to the franchise.) The content of "Daniel" is strikingly ... Read More:

. The Double Bind (Vintage Contemporaries)
City Travel Guides > Books > Mystery and Thrillers
by: Chris Bohjalian
February 12, 2008
After 24 years of reading and hundreds of books, I am still a sucker for the plot twist. All is not as it seems in this novel where "The Great Gatsby" treads lightly over that semi-permeable line between fiction and reality. Bohjalian is an incredibly talented writer, one who had me grasping at straws outside the realm of "willing suspension of disbelief," and convincing myself I knew what was true and what was going to happen.
Looking back, I cannot believe I fell for the misdirection, but it makes me want to reread the novel with a new perspective. I gave this reading four stars because for some reason the story did not pull me in until near the end, but a second reading might yield different results. I would recommend this novel, especially for lovers ... Read More:

. Every Last Drop: A Novel
City Travel Guides > Books > Mystery and Thrillers
by: Charlie Huston
September 30, 2008
Take the unlikely combination of Elmore Leonard and Bram Stoker and you get Charlie Huston and Joe Pitt, Huston's vampire-heavy who prowls the streets of New York City's boroughs in "Every Last Drop", the fourth installment of the most hip, irreverent, and darkly innovative crime fiction to hit the shelves since Raymond Chandler.
In this go around, after burning bridges with all the undead folks who matter in the various tribes of Manhattan, Pitt is exiled to the wild and unaffiliated wastelands of the Bronx and Queens, where untamed vampire gangs stalk home-bound Yankees fans, their blatant feedings threatening to expose the undead's existence to the world at large. Pitt's misfortune puts him in the hands of the abominable "Lament", an ancient and nefarious villain ... Read More:

. The Likeness: A Novel
City Travel Guides > Books > Mystery and Thrillers
by: Tana French
July 17, 2008
First, I have to say I love Tana French's prose style. The words come rushing at you headlong until you're completely entwined in the textures and colors and lights of the world she's spinning. This book is no exception.
I'll also point out that I didn't even care that we don't know what happened to Rob in the woods in the last book. I see that confusion as intrinsic to Rob's character, and I was happy to let her leave it that way. An author who writes as fluidly as French gets lots of leeway from me. But even her lovely language couldn't hide the fact that this plot made no sense.
I was willing to believe that Cassie had a double. I'd even believe that the police force was willing to put weeks and weeks of dedicated resources and personnel into finding the ... Read More:
