. Personal Demon (Women of the Otherworld, Book 8)
City Travel Guides > Books > Mystery and Thrillers
by: Kelley Armstrong
September 30, 2008
I'm a Kelley Armstrong fan, and although I have read (and in this case listened) to many of her books, she has written a few duds, and this one is one of them. My biggest issue with this story was that Hope was just boring. For someone with the moniker 'Lucifer's daughter' she's as interesting as vanilla pudding. I just did not care about her or her 'chaos sense' power, her relationship with Karl or Jazz or the demons and the cabal.
Hope shows little remorse and little humanity in her actions. The gang itself, the workings of the club and its initiaton rites were boring. I just kept losing interest.
I didn't finish this one and I doubt I ever will. Here's hoping (no pun intended) the next one will be better.

. An Ice Cold Grave (Harper Connelly Mysteries, No. 3)
City Travel Guides > Books > Mystery and Thrillers
by: Charlaine Harris
October 07, 2008
I love Charlaine Harris, period. She is a bit scary, and always great fun.
When one of her books is published, I inhabit her world for as long as the story lasts.
"Ice Cold Grave," is suspenseful, a little sexy, as are all of her books, and great fun.
Mrs. Harris claims to be a soccer mom, but she is so much more. I wish she lived across the street. Not next door, mind you. I wouldn't be too happy if one of her vampires showed up in my bedroom... On second thought, maybe I would.

. Separation of Power
City Travel Guides > Books > Mystery and Thrillers
by: Vince Flynn
August 27, 2002
I expected a little more depth of character and story development, but Flynn just rushes this book along, forcing an unrealistic plot down our throats. This is a world where the president looks at the window of the oval office in indecision and despondency at distressing world events; and does cliched things like end a meeting, then say something that sounds morbid or fatalistic just before his aides leave the room. A world in which the chairman of the joint chiefs of staff launches into a tirade about a doomsday scenario that would bring the earth to a standstill, and when career politicians whine and are easily manipulated by their politico-peers. And we're supposed to believe that the main character, who takes every last precaution deadly seriously, ... Read More:

. The Watchman: A Joe Pike Novel (Joe Pike Novels)
City Travel Guides > Books > Mystery and Thrillers
by: Robert Crais
January 29, 2008
This is a great book! Totally entertaining.
I picked it up yesterday afternoon and finished it several hours later. Great diversion.
Story has a fast moving plotline with lots of twists and turns. But it works. And feels 'real' - meaning it doesn't rely on completely outlandish, unbelievable events to keep the pace up (um, well, maybe there are a few that stretch credulity, but all in all, plausible).
And the characters are vividly cast and interesting. They really come to life. Pike is a real man's man - yet has a sensitive side to him that helps round out the appeal. Even the Paris Hilton-lookalike is likeable as she turns out to have some substance as the story progresses.

. The Draining Lake: A Thriller (Reykjavik Thriller)
City Travel Guides > Books > Mystery and Thrillers
by: Arnaldur Indridason
September 30, 2008
Just outside Reykjavik, Iceland, the draining of Lake Kleifarvatn uncovers a skeleton tied to a Cold War Russian radio device. Police inspector Erlendur and his subordinates Elinborg and Oli investigate what is obviously a homicide. With a hole in the skull and the technology employed is found that the murdered corpse was dumped in the early 1970s so they seek missing persons' cases from that era never solved.
The case haunts Erlendur as does any missing person inquiry because it reminds him of his younger brother who vanished when they were children. As they dig to identify the victim and from there hope to determine who the murderer is , the cops have hope for the former but none for the latter. The culprit could be dead, in Russia, or elsewhere.
