. The Watchman: A Joe Pike Novel (Joe Pike Novels)
City Travel Guides > Books > Mystery and Thrillers
by: Robert Crais
January 29, 2008
This is a great book! Totally entertaining.
I picked it up yesterday afternoon and finished it several hours later. Great diversion.
Story has a fast moving plotline with lots of twists and turns. But it works. And feels 'real' - meaning it doesn't rely on completely outlandish, unbelievable events to keep the pace up (um, well, maybe there are a few that stretch credulity, but all in all, plausible).
And the characters are vividly cast and interesting. They really come to life. Pike is a real man's man - yet has a sensitive side to him that helps round out the appeal. Even the Paris Hilton-lookalike is likeable as she turns out to have some substance as the story progresses.

. The Draining Lake: A Thriller (Reykjavik Thriller)
City Travel Guides > Books > Mystery and Thrillers
by: Arnaldur Indridason
September 30, 2008
Just outside Reykjavik, Iceland, the draining of Lake Kleifarvatn uncovers a skeleton tied to a Cold War Russian radio device. Police inspector Erlendur and his subordinates Elinborg and Oli investigate what is obviously a homicide. With a hole in the skull and the technology employed is found that the murdered corpse was dumped in the early 1970s so they seek missing persons' cases from that era never solved.
The case haunts Erlendur as does any missing person inquiry because it reminds him of his younger brother who vanished when they were children. As they dig to identify the victim and from there hope to determine who the murderer is , the cops have hope for the former but none for the latter. The culprit could be dead, in Russia, ... . Rebecca
City Travel Guides > Books > Mystery and Thrillers
by: Daphne Du Maurier
November 01, 1997
Here we are, romance and psychological terror at its best, all under the guise of a peaceful British manor.
At first appearance it is a classic Cinderella story: a poor girl meets a handsome, rich, and mysterious man during vacation. After their brief courtship, he marries her and takes her away to the idealistic world of Manderly.
But all is not well between the lovebirds. There may be no ghosts, but the house is haunted by the memory of the first wife, Rebecca, and the loyalty of her servants.
The mystery is grisley and intriguing, and the sweet romance keeps this going. Excellent, powerful description and a voice as insecure as they come. A great blend for a mystery that will stay with you after you have closed ... Read More:

. Second Glance: A Novel
City Travel Guides > Books > Mystery and Thrillers
by: Jodi Picoult
August 05, 2008
This is by far Jodi's most paranormal book, encouraging the reader to have an open mind. In short, it's a ghost story, one that involves a seventy-year old murder. Luckily, we have on hand a paranormal investigator whose experience is quite convenient, plus a cast of other characters who very willingly except their town haunting, rose petals snowing from the sky, and other unexplainable peculiarities. Upon beginning the book, I was a bit bogged down by the sheer number of characters. It's a pretty large cast that spans the two storylines, one in the 1930's and the other in the present. The first third of the book introduces us to the town, the characters and the plot, but is suddenly interrupted for another third of the book to tell the first person account ... Read More:

. Separation of Power
City Travel Guides > Books > Mystery and Thrillers
by: Vince Flynn
August 27, 2002
I expected a little more depth of character and story development, but Flynn just rushes this book along, forcing an unrealistic plot down our throats. This is a world where the president looks at the window of the oval office in indecision and despondency at distressing world events; and does cliched things like end a meeting, then say something that sounds morbid or fatalistic just before his aides leave the room. A world in which the chairman of the joint chiefs of staff launches into a tirade about a doomsday scenario that would bring the earth to a standstill, and when career politicians whine and are easily manipulated by their politico-peers. And we're supposed to believe that the main character, who takes every last precaution deadly seriously, brings the woman he ... Read More:

. Cold Hearted
City Travel Guides > Books > Mystery and Thrillers
by: Beverly Barton
September 01, 2008
Cold Hearted brings us into a world of controversy when a popular elected official commits suicide when it was discovered that he had been stricken by a debilitating disease. The controversy centers around his wife (now widow) Jordan Price who never showed the slightest bit of emotions when she discovered this tragedy or at the funeral. A private investigator (also the late senator's brother) is committed to expose the truth and begins digging up information on his late brother's widow and discovers a sordid list of husbands whom died under suspicious circumstances. The plot thickens when the late senator's first wife threatens Jordan and then is found dead. Beverly Barton has written a inviting tale of intrigue and created the perfect praying mantis in Jordan Price.

. All the Pretty Horses
City Travel Guides > Books > Mystery and Thrillers
by: Cormac Mccarthy
June 29, 1993
Sometime in the 1940s, John Grady Cole and Lacey Rawlins, two Texan teens, head off to Mexico on horseback. Their journey is one of laughter and horror, as these two boys are forced to grow up fast and hard.
That's about the best I can give you for a plot summary. It's amazing that "All the Pretty Horses" runs just over 300 pages. It feels more epic in nature. It IS epic, I suppose; just a short one. McCarthy's prose is as rich and vibrant as ever, though it's a bit more restrained here than in other of his works--I can see why this book is among his more commercially successful novels. Indeed, it's an odd companion to his other great Western piece, "Blood Meridian" (which is arguably a superior book; but then, that's like asking which gold medal shines brighter--there's ...
