. Damage Control (Joanna Brady Mysteries, Book 13)
City Travel Guides > Books > Mystery and Thrillers
by: J. A. Jance
July 22, 2008
I've been reading J. A. Jance's Joanna Brady mysteries since the first one, Desert Heat, was published back in 1993. The earlier books were all great reads, but frankly, I'd become a little bored with the series due to the mostly predictable behavior of its principal characters until I read the latest book, Damage Control. This book has a lot going on, holds your interest, and most importantly to me, it feels real for a change. In fact, several scenes brought tears to my eyes, which is unusual for me. Not a great book, but a very good one indeed.

. The Reluctant Fundamentalist
City Travel Guides > Books > Mystery and Thrillers
by: Mohsin Hamid
April 14, 2008
This book is useful as a popularizer of a Pakistani view of America post 9-11. It also provides bits of local color of Princeton, New York, Valparaiso, and Lahore. It was a delightful reading experience and provoked more discussion than time allowed with the book club I attend. Some of the sore spots of America are displayed with a view that is cosmopolitan and post-colonial. My only problem with the novel is that it exploits the reading public's interest in religious fundamentalism with a title that suggests that the book is about a reluctant Muslim fundamentalist when in fact it is about a reluctant financial analyst of the fundamentals of balance sheets who happens to be a Pakistani immigrant to the U.S. To give the author and publisher their ... . The Wasted Vigil
City Travel Guides > Books > Mystery and Thrillers
by: Nadeem Aslam
September 09, 2008
No matter what your political persuasion, this book will provide you with a new perspective on Afghanistan. Through a simple, but compelling narrative story involving characters from diverse backgrounds, The Wasted Vigil reminds us of the oft forgotten cultural and human elements of Afghan society, including their interaction with other cultures. Similar to the movie Crash, The Wasted Vigil shows the interconnectedness of all who have been involved in Afghanistan. Many of the themes developed in this book can be applied to other countries as well.

. The Fifth Floor
City Travel Guides > Books > Mystery and Thrillers
by: Michael Harvey
August 26, 2008
With his second novel, "The Fifth Floor", following last year's "The Chicago Way", Michael Harvey has cemented his position as one of my "must read" authors in the urban noir genre. His style is infectious and spell-binding. His prose flows like a movie screen play and his sense of pacing and plotting is unassailable. As I said in my previous review of his work, his ability to paint vivid word pictures, especially of Chicago and its environs, makes me feel I have been there (which I haven't) and that I would recognize it when I someday see it.
This time around, Michael Kelly, former cop and current PI, is engaged in a domestic case involving an old girl friend who is being abused by her husband, Johnny Woods, a "fixer" for the mayor whose offices ... Read More:

. The Draining Lake: A Thriller (Reykjavik Thriller)
City Travel Guides > Books > Mystery and Thrillers
by: Arnaldur Indridason
September 30, 2008
Just outside Reykjavik, Iceland, the draining of Lake Kleifarvatn uncovers a skeleton tied to a Cold War Russian radio device. Police inspector Erlendur and his subordinates Elinborg and Oli investigate what is obviously a homicide. With a hole in the skull and the technology employed is found that the murdered corpse was dumped in the early 1970s so they seek missing persons' cases from that era never solved.
The case haunts Erlendur as does any missing person inquiry because it reminds him of his younger brother who vanished when they were children. As they dig to identify the victim and from there hope to determine who the murderer is , the cops have hope for the former but none for the latter. The culprit could be dead, in Russia, or elsewhere.

. Second Glance: A Novel
City Travel Guides > Books > Mystery and Thrillers
by: Jodi Picoult
August 05, 2008
This is by far Jodi's most paranormal book, encouraging the reader to have an open mind. In short, it's a ghost story, one that involves a seventy-year old murder. Luckily, we have on hand a paranormal investigator whose experience is quite convenient, plus a cast of other characters who very willingly except their town haunting, rose petals snowing from the sky, and other unexplainable peculiarities. Upon beginning the book, I was a bit bogged down by the sheer number of characters. It's a pretty large cast that spans the two storylines, one in the 1930's and the other in the present. The first third of the book introduces us to the town, the characters and the plot, but is suddenly interrupted for another third of the book to tell the first person account of the dead ...
