. The Last Patriot: A Thriller
City Travel Guides > Books > Mystery and Thrillers
by: Brad Thor
July 01, 2008
I chose this book for our book club and I was thrilled that it turned out to be an exciting and interesting book. I read it in two days and couldn't put it down. The chapters are short so I kept reading "just one more chapter" until I had finished the book. I learned so much about Thomas Jefferson that I ended up buying a book called,"Jefferson Writings" and I might even venture to say that he just may be my favorite President now that I know more about him. I also bought two books on Niccolo Machiavelli. I was constantly checking the internet to read up on some of the inventions mentioned in the book. The writing style of this book reminded me of DiVinci Code. I was a little apprehensive at first that it would be anti Muslim, but it ... Read More:

. Fearless Fourteen (Stephanie Plum, No. 14)
City Travel Guides > Books > Mystery and Thrillers
by: Janet Evanovich
June 17, 2008
I've stuck with Stephanie Plum through think and thin, but this is the end. I'm just glad I took it out of the library rather than paying $28. Other reviewers have said it all, the verve's not there, so I'll stick to the low points: formulaic pablum and at least one misleading bit.
"...and we all piled into Lula's Firebird. Lula drove north on 206, past Rider College, to a neighborhood of modest homes." Well Rider College, actually University since 1994, is in Lawrenceville, NJ, a goodly piece from the Burg, and there are no such neighborhoods. Immediately north of Lawrenceville is Princeton. Apparently J.E.'s forgetting her NJ geography up there in New Hampshire. Shame on St. Martin's press, too, for letting that slip through. ... Read More:

. Silks
City Travel Guides > Books > Mystery and Thrillers
by: Dick Francis, Felix Francis
August 26, 2008
Superbly narrated by Martin Jarvis, "Silks" is the collaborative work of Dick and Felix Francis. This unabridged, 9 disk audio book is a compelling racetrack murder mystery set in Britain. Defense Lawyer Geoffrey Mason is not only a barrister in London's Old Bailey, but an amateur jock with a passion for horse racing. When a fellow jockey is brutally murdered by a pitchfork through the chest, Mason is called upon to defend Steve Mitchell, a fellow jockey and the most likely suspect. A story of violence, intrigue, and threats upon his own life, Geoffrey Mason is faced with a complex web of possibilities and unknowns that must be resolved if his client is to be cleared -- and his own life preserved. Dick Francis is an acknowledged master of race track mysteries, ... Read More:

. Dead Until Dark (Southern Vampire Mysteries, Book 1)
City Travel Guides > Books > Mystery and Thrillers
by: Charlaine Harris
May 01, 2001
She has supernatural abilities, both a vampire and a shapeshifter romantically interested in her, various supernatural creatures appear in the stories, and vampire bars and nightclubs play major roles in the narratives and even supply names for books. Put that description out to most people and they are apt to say, "Oh yeah, Anita Blake." Charlaine Harris's Southern Vampire Mysteries, starring the telepathic Sookie Stackhouse, do bear a superficial resemblance to Laurell K. Hamilton's Anita Blake books. But the resemblances quickly disintegrate after that. What drew me to the Anita Blake books were their wonderful premise of a world in which vampires and other supernatural beings were real and striving to live alongside humans. I loved the idea of necromancer Anita ... Read More:

. Nights in Rodanthe
City Travel Guides > Books > Mystery and Thrillers
by: Nicholas Sparks
July 01, 2003
If you are in the mood for a quick read, it took me just a few hours to complete the book, then this might interest you. I'd say this book isn't any better than a made for T.V. movie, or prime-time episode of your favorite t.v. show. Although, it isn't that great, it isn't horrible either. Nights in Rodanthe is a very typical Nicholas Sparks book with all of the same style and writing techniques. Love story, flashbacks to a time when all was right in the world yadda yadda yadda. It's a good way to fill a night where not much else is on the horizon.

. Robert Ludlum's (TM) The Bourne Sanction
City Travel Guides > Books > Mystery and Thrillers
by: Eric Van Lustbader
July 29, 2008
I hope I can save someone from wasting money on this book. To say it's boring is being very kind. The pace of the story is so slow, the characters are so shallow; including Jason Bourne, and the dialogue is so predictable and trite, that you can begin to read a paragraph and just finish it yourself if you insert some trite, predictable lines. I read 60-80 books a year, I always finish a book even if I find it less then desirable. Not so with this book, halfway through and I deleted it from my Kindle, it was that BAD! I'd rather lose the intrinsic value then waste any more time with it. It is truly the worst book I have had the misfortune to (try to) read in the last 5 years.

. Batman: Arkham Asylum (15th Anniversary Edition)
City Travel Guides > Books > Mystery and Thrillers
by: Grant Morrison
November 01, 2005
This is not your typical batman. Heck, this is not even the Miller Dark Knight. It makes Miller's Dark Knight seem like a puppy dog. This Batman kills and he kills with no reservations. Batman does not really behave as Batman but I can totally accept that because even a superhero has his moods or split personalities on certain days, no? The story is somewhat contrived as Batman is called to Asylum for help only to be put in a test where he has to face all his nemesis' and in the end everyone learns a lesson. It is deep and dreamy and the illustrations are fittingly dream-like and resemble abstract fine art. You won't even recognize Batman in this book. It is one of those books where you love or hate and guaranteed you will love after a few more readings if you're up to the task.
