. Ms. Hempel Chronicles
City Travel Guides > Books > Mystery and Thrillers
by: Sarah Shun-lien Bynum
September 08, 2008
This is Bynum's second book, following her much-acclaimed Madeleine Is Sleeping. It is presented as a shortish novel, but is essentially a collection of short stories published in various sources, including the New Yorker. Excellently written, witty and profound at the same time. Gives great insight into the seventh-grade mind and that of a teacher dedicated to her charges. Bynum plays with time, psychology and humor in a new and original way. The book is highly entertaining -- perfect for teenagers and parents alike.

. Deja Dead
City Travel Guides > Books > Mystery and Thrillers
from: Pocket Star
June 01, 1998
I've read several of Kathy Reichs'Temperance Brennan novels (out of order of course) and I wanted to go back and read the first in the series. Had this been the first of the Brennan novels I read, I probably would have been willing to give others a try. This book was okay, but Kathy Reichs does much better as the series progresses. I saw where another reviewer did not like the use of one word sentences. I honestly loved the technique. It was short and got the point across without going into boring statements. Which of these is better?: "Could be" Ryan or "Could be" Ryan said. That's just a matter of taste and I thought it gave the novel(s) kind of that Dragnet dimension. Anyway, this novel seemed kind of hard to follow for me as Tempe was (and she does in other novels) ... Read More:

. The Gun Seller
City Travel Guides > Books > Mystery and Thrillers
by: Hugh Laurie
October 01, 1998
As a huge fan of House (not to mention my fascination for stars that try to break into other creative mediums), it was only a matter of time before I picked this book up. I won't lie; my expectations were not high, partially because I'm not familiar with Hugh Laurie's body of work outside of House and mostly because I am prepared to be disappointed by crossover work by people I admire.
My fears were completely misplaced.
I can honestly say that this is my favorite book in a long time. The style of writing is humorous and interesting, the characters are likable in their own quirky ways, and the plot twists unpredictably. This is a book I'd put right next to Fight Club on the list of "Books That Revitalize My Desire To Read."
I read one review that ... Read More:

. The Chocolate Snowman Murders (Chocoholic Mysteries, No. 8)
City Travel Guides > Books > Mystery and Thrillers
by: JoAnna Carl
September 30, 2008
I have all the chocoholic books and I love them all. However, I think it is safe to declare this one the best in the series so far. The last book was a bit of a disappointment but this has renewed my faith in the author, so much so that it was even worth the hardcover price.
The story centers around the small town of Warner Pier, Michigan and its christmas festival, WinterFest, in hopes to attract tourism and drum up business in a wintery time when business would otherwise be slow. Lee Woodyard, the main character and series amateur sleuth, is the treasurer of the WinterFest committee and through a series of events winds up traveling to a town an hour away to pick up the judge of the Warner Pier art show, who is thoroughly sloshed and quite amorous. She successfully fights him off and dumps him ... Read More:
