Stone Barrington and his "friends and lovers" provide another exciting story. Funny, good plot, and great ending say it all. The author made one error in the book and I was able to email him and tell him of the correction. Did not take away from a wonderful story.

Brunonia Barry's THE LACE READER grabs the reader's attention from the first page, and never disappoints. It's well-written, well-edited, and tells quite a "tall tale" that seems real. I read it almost nonstop and immediately sent it to my best friend, who quickly emailed "Read one page and I'm hooked." It's clear why this book has gotten the attention that it has. I can only hope that the author will write more.

The book is fascinating, throws you into a world that is hard to comprehend for some and yet a lot of what is being described are things everyone of us "westerners" feels and does as well.

A must read.

This is more of the same--our fearless protaganist haplessly makes her way through life with sexy guys on standby.
If you liked it before, you'll like it now; it's a nice "twinkie" story (light on substance but fun to eat...I mean, read).

Not really a novel. Too short and too thin, in every sense of the term. Merely a confection, an homage to the earlier books WHICH YOU CAN STILL GET ON AMAZON OR EBAY. But it does raise the deeply philosophical literary question that, if you initially set the bar in the stratosphere by creating the single greatest action hero in the history of US fiction (no, not kidding, mean every word) and then you allow your later books to get sloppier, and thinner -- can you still outscore everyone else in the genre because you started out at such a lofty level??? At least it is not as insane as the just-prior book, the "Bob-Sans-Bullets" one, which was also an historical achievement, but not one to boast of. If "Jane" had been "Rizzoli", and there had been just a little bit more character development, this book would have been over the top. The writing, as always, is excellent. The plot twists. The archaeological information is fascinating. But the family life is missing. Maura's internal questioning continued her story, but I missed Jane's mother, and Gabriel Dean. They were shadowy figures dispensed with in a few paragraphs. I like to see the "Jane at home" parts of the story -- it adds such dimension to her character. It didn't, of course, keep me from staying up half the night to finish the book. The writing and the plot pulled me right along. I couldn't put it down.

I'm not going to recap the story for you as it has been covered several times.

I have read every novel by Kathy Reichs and this is the first one I have NOT enjoyed. What's worse is I have been aware of it all along. Every page has been a little too much, a little too much detail, a little too much covering of the info we already know about Temperance. Not nearly as bad as Patricia Cornwell. One of the reasons Cornwell is so tedious is because she is the center of every novel. In Temperance Brennan novels, the mystery is the center.

But there is a terrible disconnect between the novel and the television program. The characters are unpleasantly different. The television program has a character who is wooden, unfeeling, scientific to a fault. ... Read More:

I purchased this book after hearing an interview with the author on our local radio station. I was skeptical, but the general plot intrigued me. I'm not particularly fond of fiction and mystery type novels are a genera that I have mixed feelings about.

However, I was completely immersed in The Book of Lies from start to finish. Every waking moment I had that wasn't devoted to something else my nose was buried deep in this book. I commend the author for such an amazingly well told story, well developed characters, and a very entertaining ride.

I also love Alexander McCall Smith and Isabel Dalhousie is one of my favorite characters. This novel is so enjoyable, as there are plenty of observations on human nature and the beauty and history of Scotland. I had a few laughs out loud while enjoying Isabel's latest situations. However, I agree with another reviewer that the subplots did not go anywhere. I was a little disappointed, but even a book without a plot written by McCall Smith is better than many other books out there. And he is so prolific, you can't really fault him. I can't wait for the next installment in this series, as the characters are so real and interesting.
