. Child 44
City Travel Guides > Books > Mystery and Thrillers
by: Tom Rob Smith
April 29, 2008
Set during 1950s Soviet Russia, Child 44 grimly depicts the reality faced by Russian citizens under the rule of Stalin. I was sometimes disturbed by the scenes, but appreciate the research and historical accuracy Smith integrates into his narrative. I felt I was granted an insider's view of this time in Russia's history and the struggles of its people.
Tom Rob Smith has created a wonderful first novel. His ability to weave seemingly disparate elements into a cohesive narrative is impressive. I kept reading simply because I wanted to know how it was all going to come together. I would recommend this to any mystery fan. Of all the recent books of this genre I have read, this is by far the best.

. Plague Ship (Oregon Files)
City Travel Guides > Books > Mystery and Thrillers
by: Clive Cussler
June 03, 2008
I'll admit to being a tad disappointed in some of Clive's latest efforts, but combined with Jack DuBrul, this brings him back to the top of the heap. Despite being over 500 pages long, I read it in a day and a half.
Cussler and DuBrul have a writing style that fits me like a glove. Though it is a formula, it is what I come to expect from them, and the whole reason I seek out their books. It is easy to read, exciting, and follows most of the "rules" of writing. In this one, I noticed lots of times where they mix points of view within scenes, and though that is a big no-no for new writers, it did not detract from a great story.
The premise of sterilizing the world to stave off overpopulation kept my attention, especially ... Read More:

. Lush Life: A Novel
City Travel Guides > Books > Mystery and Thrillers
by: Richard Price
March 04, 2008
Richard Price's writing career has established him as an author who can do it all, from novels to movies to TV, and after a few years of contributing his talents to the dearly departed TV classic The Wire he's returned to the printed word in a big way with Lush Life. Like a great deal of Price's work it has its overly slow spots, but Lush Life still marks a significant step up in quality from Price's last book, the merely good Samaritan, and comes pretty close to the level of the classic Clockers. It's both a heavily detailed crime procedural and a sweeping urban drama, with a wide-ranging scope that captures the aftermath of a startling crime from the viewpoint of everyone affected, from witnesses to perpetrators to detectives to friends and family. ... . The Legal Limit
City Travel Guides > Books > Mystery and Thrillers
by: Martin Clark
July 08, 2008
To call The Legal Limit "a summer read" does it an enormous disservice. It's my favorite kind of book: well-written, but not so much that the writing calls attention to itself; fast-paced, but not so much that you don't stop to ponder some of the deeper questions it raises. And those deeper issues are there -- questions of loyalty, morality, crime and punishment, and ultimately the difference between law and justice. Yes, it's a very compelling page-turner, but it's a lot more than that, too!
The plot is pretty straight-forward (and this is NOT a spoiler, since it's the first scene of the book): two brothers get into an altercation with a guy on a country road late one night and one shoots and kills him. Mason, the good brother, helps Gates, ... Read More:

. From Dead to Worse (Southern Vampire Mysteries, Book 8)
City Travel Guides > Books > Mystery and Thrillers
by: Charlaine Harris
May 06, 2008
I have enjoyed all of the Books 1-7, but I am very disappointed in From Dead to Worse.
This book read like a guide book of Sookie-land. It reads as if Ms. Harris could not really think up a good enough plot to carry throughout the story, so she had some rather quick fix situations that only took minutes to resolve, with lots of detail about nothing leading up to them, and too much backstory being told to us rather than shown to us in action and dialogue.
There was no build up of mystery or suspense at all, these things practically happened out of the blue. And all these things happened in about a week, very haphazardly.
The fact that C.H. seems to want to make the reader dislike all of Sookie's ex's is kind of grating on my ... Read More:

. The Tin Roof Blowdown (Dave Robicheaux Mysteries)
City Travel Guides > Books > Mystery and Thrillers
by: James Lee Burke
June 17, 2008
Although I've been an avid reader all my life, somehow I'd never heard of James Lee Burke before noticing "Tin Roof Blowdown" at the corner grocery market one night when desperate for reading material and there was nothing by familiar favorite authors in the bookstand. So I took a chance and by 10 pages in that night, I was hooked on Mr. Burke -- that was my first novel of his but it certainly won't be my last. Fantastic writer! Robicheaux is an intriguing, complex leading man and Burke's telling of the Katrina tragedy is RIVETING, SUSPENSEFUL, MOVING, MULTI-LAYERED. His writing is poetic and thought-provoking yet moves like a speeding train, I couldn't put the book down all weekend, it's one of the best books I've ever read. That was only a month ago and I've read ... Read More:

. Bones to Ashes: A Novel (Temperance Brennan Novels)
City Travel Guides > Books > Mystery and Thrillers
by: Kathy Reichs
June 24, 2008
"Bones to Ashes" by Kathy Reichs was an interesting mystery to read. Ms. Reichs is the author who inspired the TV drama on FOX television called "Bones". I enjoy the show, so I was excited to read one of her books!
The book is about Temperance Brennan, "Tempe", who is a forensic anthropologist. Tempe is a busy woman, helping her ex-lover `Ryan' with a rash of teen abductions and deaths/murders, helping her pal `Hippo' with identifying a skeleton found where Tempe spent time as a young girl, and working all the other cases that come in as well.
Tempe is concerned that the skeleton is that of her best friend from 5 of her childhood summers spent at Pawleys Island. She just disappeared one summer day and though Tempe and her younger sister ... Read More:
