I think this book is a real good one! And I recommend it to everybody who's interested in history, culture, etc. I went to Tokyo and Kyoto with it, and I was able to understand many things, and to see a lot!
There's great pictures, detailed map, and smart comments. The author really understand the country from the inside.

"China" tries to cover too much (including Tibet and Inner Mongolia) to be useful as a tour book (imagine trying to cover the U.S. in < 400 pages), and lacks enough photos (none the size or quality associated with "National Geographic") to qualify as a treat for the senses. In addition, it totally fails to address the enormous changes in China via its new construction and industrialization.

"China" does offer good tips on bargaining (in some situations), smoking, avoiding frank political discussions, renting rooms near a Karaoke ounge, jostling (vs. lines), and general lack of credit card acceptance. National Geographic was THE window to the world in my youth, a more image-impoverished, dignified (and arrogant) time. But still, one expects great images and literate text from this source. And we get some of that. This book focuses on brief site descriptions coupled with a striking image. More significant sites (e.g. Delphi, Epidavros) add an image or two, a map or a drawing. There is a very brief section at the back on travel practicalities, hotels, food and a page or two for a Greek phrase book.

I'm torn. I am genetically incapable of criticizing National Geographic, other than for not being like I remember it. Yet this book falls between several stools. It doesn't have enough maps or hotel info to be taken on your trip to ... Read More:

Using this guide book my boyfriend and I planned an amazing Mexican getaway and traveled all over central and eastern Mexico by bus. This guide gave us great local information and all of the spots they suggested turned out to be wonderful. I will keep this forever with our notes and lend it to friends that want to have a great time! Great buy!

I took this book along with me to Maui in Sept 2007 and referred to it several times. Although the book does contain some information in the back about hotels and restaurants, this book's focus is on the attractions, nature, and history of the Hawaiian islands.

Since it's a National Geographic publication, the book is full of gorgeous photography of the highlights of Hawaii. The book is organized by island (which makes sense) and contains articles on the best attractions. These are wonderful if you want to learn about the places you are seeing.

I'm a big fan of the National Geographic Traveler books - as a companion to something like the Rough Guide for a specific place. The NGT books provide a lot of interesting background information and all the great photos and maps and diagrams that I love from the original NG magazine.

A single guide to all of Canada is too broad a topic for much detail. This guide provides a good overview of the country and it's regions. I'm using this book to learn more about the country and decide where I'd like to go. Once I've made that decision, I turn to a regionally specific book.

This is an excellent bookguide of Southern Italy with so many beautiful pictures that just by looking at them, you will want to book a flight and visit it as soon as possible. It features self-guided walking tours (Old Naples) and driving tours (Amalfi Coast, Romanesque Apulia and Sila Mountains), great information and description of landmarks (history and food in Southern Italy) and the following interesting articles: Pizza and Pizzerie, Underground Naples, Vesuvius, Trulli, Cultural Crossroads and the Maffia.

However, even though it features great regional maps (Amalfi Coast and Campanian Islands, Apulia, Calabria & Basilicata and Sicily & Sardinia), the only city maps included are those of Naples and Palermo. Besides, while the ... Read More:
