If you plan to purchase several guides to Ireland, this one would be worth adding to your collection. The photographs are beautiful, and the descriptions of sites of interest, while not the most in-depth around, are certainly more than adequate for a book of this type. If you are like me and your budget allows for 2, maybe 3 books, and you are trying to choose from the almost overwhelming number of guidebooks available these days, this is one you can probably skip. The practical information is quite limited compared to other guides, especially with regard to places to stay or eat. This would be an enjoyable book to peruse at home both before and after your trip, and it would be great for an armchair traveler, but I can't see it making its ... Read More:

This volume is a mine of fascinating and important information, with comprehensive yet succinct narration and explanation about Chinese history, customs and culture, along with a great array of pictures and maps as well as practical guidance for preparing for and making a trip to mainland China.

I bought this guide thinking I was going to get an accurate view of India -more anthropology, art history, etc, than other guides in the market that cater to the non adventure types, given the author's knowledge of Indian Art and frequent travels to the subcontinent. However, the guide turned out to be kind of disappointing and although nice pictures, very hollow. It offers a rather oversimplified view on various topics ranging from women's role in society and textiles, for example, while lacking information on everyday etiquette. It doesn't offer information or approx admission charges for museums and sites (would have been useful to know that foreigners are charged more than residents and that guide books are not allowed in the Taj Mahal). This guide is beautiful and very thorough, including information on even small towns and good subway maps for Barcelona and Madrid. It is also thorough in noting all the attractions each place has to offer, providing historical information as well as contact information, subway stop, operation hours, and free days! Most museums in Spain are closed at least one day a week, and we used this everywhere we went. It discusses major museums, churches, and mosques and points out important artists, carvings, or architechtural peculiarities in each. Another great feature is suggested walking routes in interesting neighborhoods in major cities - Spain has plenty of small streets, and we would've definitely missed some amazing places if not for this guide.
