I thought this was a very useful guide to start with. It covers everything from history and culture to how to get around Paris and of course what to do and see as well as where to eat, etc. The pictures are absolutely lovely, and the Paris metro guide in the back comes in handy. The maps could be more detailed, though. For those who can manage French, I would suggest buying an actual guide in French like Le Guide du Routard. No pictures there, but a lot more information.

I thought this was a very useful guide to start with. National Geographic have set a whole new standard in travel guides. I have several and I think they are excellent. Generally speaking,travel guides become outdated within a year or so after being published. As a matter of fact,some series are issued annually. They are loaded with information on lodging, hotels,B&B's,and restauralts with lots of data on prices. These things become out-of -date very quickly;and even when you look up rates,you will find most of of little or no interest. Besides these things are easily obtained elsewhere ,for instance on the Net.

If you plan to purchase several guides to Ireland, this one would be worth adding to your collection. The photographs are beautiful, and the descriptions of sites of interest, while not the most in-depth around, are certainly more than adequate for a book of this type. If you are like me and your budget allows for 2, maybe 3 books, and you are trying to choose from the almost overwhelming number of guidebooks available these days, this is one you can probably skip. The practical information is quite limited compared to other guides, especially with regard to places to stay or eat. This would be an enjoyable book to peruse at home both before and after your trip, and it would be great for an armchair traveler, but I can't see it making its way into ... Read More:

if you've ever purchased a NG travel guide you know they're awesome. great pics. However, not as detailed as others with all the hotel costs, food prices, etc. Gave it to my father-in-law before their trip to europe and they love it.

I looked for many books out there for my first visit to Paris and this one turned out to be really great. It divides the city well into manageable parts and also has nice outlined walking tours of certain areas to get an overall view of the city. Overall, good information and very useful for a first visit to Paris.

National Geographic Traveler: India is a beautiful book, useful for exploring sites and historical background but terribly outdated in practical information about prices for hotel rooms and such because of the incredible recent growth and inflation in India and the shortage of accommodations there.
