I have been to Ireland 3 times, have used several guides, and have a substantial collection of Irish literature and pictorial
books. When I saw this book,I immediately saw it was very different.I am also very familiar with National Geographic Field Guides from birding.Back in 1983,they published "Birds of North America" and rapidly became the preferred book for birders.Every birder I know has a copy. They even update their copy with each new addition. These Bird Guides are used in the field, take a great amount of hard use,in all kinds of weather, and in spite of it all, still hold together. Not only that, there is no other better all purpose guide. To date, it has sold over 1 1/2 million copies and more are coming. This has been a marvelous feat because ... . National Geographic Traveler, Passage To China, January/February 2008 Issue
City Travel Guides > Books > National Geographic Traveler
by: Editors of NATIONAL GEOGRAPHIC TRAVELER Magazine

The nat'l geo series is a fantastic trip preparation guide. The photos, stories, insights into culture - this helped us choose which regions of OZ that we wanted to visit. For this I give 4 out of 5. The last star I reserve because some of the smaller places are not listed that are real gems! It is understandable though that no guide will have every dot on the map, this is why you travel and explore!! Note: for this sort of preparation and planning activity we have found no better guidebook series! However, what we've found is that these guides are not good for hotels, restaurants, etc - there are a few (expensive!!) listed. Nor are they good for navigating/driving (we drove Melbourne to Cairns). I recommend using this guide to prepare ... Read More:

. The National Geographic Traveler: London
City Travel Guides > Books > National Geographic Traveler
by: National Geographic Society
May 01, 2004
My boyfriend and I went to London and took this book and a Fodors and found that *between them* we had the perfect travel guide. The National Geographic guide had better maps, beautiful pictures, and more detailed information, but about fewer things. It also doesn't have exact prices and instead it has a certain number of dollar signs to tell you generally how expensive something is, which was a bit annoying (I know they were trying to stay vague in order to account for changes since printing, but still...). I highly recommend this book in combination with the Fodors, which has more superficial information but about a tremendous number of things. The only drawback about that is- two books get heavy when you are lugging them around London.
