this book is so wonderful. as you travel around new york, you keep finding more and more interesting places. the writers have done a great job of describing some of the oddities and best kept secrets of new york state. i keep it in the car, and have been to 1/2 of them already. a must have for anyone who likes to go off the beaten path

This book was fantastic! It was a great guide for the Eastern Sierra. It took us to places we wouldn't have otherwise gone and that I'm glad we didn't miss. For instance, without this book I would have had no idea that there were hot springs in the area (Hot Creek) or that the Alabama Hills would be both beautiful and interesting. The photography in the book is fantastic and it's just beautiful to look at even if you never intend to go. My only complaint is that the author didn't say more about the Little Lakes Valley. It was an absolutely spectacular hike, although I had to hear about it from a stranger at a campground. The author mentions it briefly, but in my opinion, it's a "can't miss" area that she should have said more about.

I thought that this was a nice resource for my time in New Orleans, which was regretfully short (only three days). I will caution that I pretty much never left the French Quarter - Hotel Monteleone was gorgeous and comfy! - so I can't speak for the other areas detailed in the book. The maps are excellent, and the restaurant suggestions matched my boyfriend's personal experiences.

The Man Who Walked Through Time is about Colin Fletcher's 1963 solo backpacking trip through the Grand Canyon, it is considered a classic of Outdoor Literature ranked #45 in National Geographic's "100 Best Adventure Books". It was first published in January 1968, almost exactly 40 years from the date of this review - the author was 41 when he took the trip, I am 41, and Fletcher emerged from the trip declaring "life begins at 40", adding the journey had offered him the "key to contentment." Like Dante's descent into the Inferno 'in media res' (age 40), Fletcher descended into the Abyss of the Canyon and emerged a spiritually changed man, changing the landscape of outdoor recreation with him.

A very interesting book. Some of the places are REALLY isolated. I'm always a little bit cautious about being so cut off from civilization, in case of a medical emergency. However, if you are young and healthy, the book is filled with great ideas.

As can be expected from a Lonely Planet publication, Vancouver City Guide authored by John Lee is a resourceful, informative, and highly entertaining book. Written in lively, attractive English, this guide has everything one expects from it: background information on the place, clear division into thematic chapters, cross-references between individual sections, reference guide at the end , and - what is of utmost importance - up-to-date information on what Vancouver has to offer - from arts festivals to skiing clinics. After living in NYC for a few years, I got this for some friends visiting the city. There were cool places I did not previously know about (especially in non-Manhattan areas like Bronx and Queens). The cards can help you plan trips around each attraction, which is helpful so you often don't have to do extra research to find out transportation, for example. The illustrations are colorful and fun, but definitely kid-ish in design. The cards and box are slightly clunky to carry around, however.

We recently returned form WDW and had a great time! The tips in the book were valuable. It helped our family enjoy most of the rides and attractions with minimal wait. 15 minutes was the max wait time - even in peak season, mid-August on a Monday afternoon. The tips on how to use the Fastpass system helped us to walk on to most rides. Other attractions were a brief wait. Tips for parade watching gave us choice seats and views. The book needs to be updated for 2008 - some attractions don't have fastpass anymore. Other than that, great buy! A must read before heading to WDW with the family. The book also provides tips for Universal and SeaWorld which is a bonus.
