This book is okay as a planning resource if you are a family of 3 or 4 and all your kids are under 12. If you are a larger family or have older kids, skip this, you're not going to find the kind of information you're looking for.

This book DOES NOT contain any information on the following:

Appropriateness of any sights, activities or attractions to the different age groups (pre-schoolers, grade schoolers and teens).

Interest level or fun factor for any of the sights, activities or attractions to the different age groups (pre-schoolers, grade schoolers or teens).

Which hotels can accomodate families of 3 only (more common than you think).
Which hotels can accomodate families of 4.

I prefer guidebooks that aren't just mammoth listings of everything (hotels, restaurants, sights). This compact book hits the target with its highlights and its walking tours.
You get directions, maps and commentary. Boxed notes give relevance to much that you would unknowingly pass by. Boxed in sage green are SHOPPING TIPS and ENTERTAINMENT TIPS while RESTAURANT TIPS are boxed in dark green. This covers the sights on the Island and the 20 Arrondissements plus some further afield (Versailles, Disneyland Paris, etc.).

At first glance this book seems great until you read the first chapter or so and then you find yourself looking back thinking you've just read this exact advice,description,reccomendation, etc and there must be some mistake, but alas, no. This book literally continuously repeats itself and I mean, VERBATIM, page after page, chapter after chapter til you can effectively skip over the majority of each section. When you read it you will think that Alabama Jack's and Denny's Latin Cafe must have paid to have this book published as they are mentioned in every single section multiple times til you are already sick of them and you've never even been there! Jay Fenster knows all there is to know for the visitor to Las Vegas. Having his book was like having the best possible tour guide right by my side.

I love Mr. Fenster's writing style, and the organization of the book, his grouping of attractions based on the visitor's length of stay. As a non-gambler, I was especially interested in what else we could do. Following Fenster's recommendations, we requested a high room with a street view (gorgeous at night!), had a buffet at the Rio (over 300 dishes), saw Cirque du Soliel `Mystere', and ventured off the strip to the Green Valley Ranch, Lake Las Vegas, and Red Rock Canyon Conservation area. After being escorted through the wilds and wilderness of Utah by Ted Brewer's guide a few years back, I made a note to look for him again on my next trip. When some friends and I went to Prague in December of last year I was pleasantly surprised to find his guide to the Czech/Slovak Republics. This guide distinguishes itself from most other guides by not containing much in the way of pictures. I was a little concerned at first, but discovered that this was actually much better, in that I didn't have any preconceived notions about what the castles and countryside was supposed to look like.

I have found this book to be very helpful in road travel, especially in small out of the way places that you find when you get off the interstate. While some prices are higher in the large cities (to be expected), the book helped in finding clean, safe motels in small cities for a resonable price. Even the listings for large cities offer alternatives to overpriced mega hotels. The details around things like whether pets are allowed or not was extremely helpful. Whitcombe obviously knows his stuff, and I for one am grateful that he's shared it in this book. If you like road travel on a budget, this book is a must!

I am planning day trips from a point in County Clare and find this book invaluable in deciding short and longer excursions for us. It's an easy read and chock full of information and delightful suggestions. Probably the best i've found so far, and I own serveral other guide books
