. Bottlemania: How Water Went on Sale and Why We Bought It
City Travel Guides > Books > Outdoors and Nature
by: Elizabeth Royte
May 13, 2008
I found this book to be highly informative, putting a human face on a series of complex issues without simple answers. The book itself draws uncertain conclusions and leaves ultimate decisions in the hands of individual consumers and the masses, both localized and globalized. I found myself armed with new factual information with which to present my own arguments and with which to make my own personal decisions, including many surprising tidbits that were truly eye-openers. Despite a lengthy bibliography, an early factual error (on page 21, where the City of Boston was said to draw its water from the Connecticut River) led me to more closely question other factual information with which I may be less familiar. That minor annoyance aside, I would ... Read More:

. The Children's Blizzard (P.S.)
City Travel Guides > Books > Outdoors and Nature
by: David Laskin
October 11, 2005
In January of 1888, a terrible blizzard, which came to be known as the "Schoolchildren's Blizzard" blew in across the Nebraska & Dakota Territory prairie. It was so-called because the deaths from the blizzard were largely of children who left school because of the bad weather coming. Sadly, they left "at the moment when the wind shifted and the sky exploded (2)."
Using a wide variety of sources, Laskin has put together this account of that fateful day, but the book is much more than just a retelling of the event. He also details other immigrants' experiences such as tough crossings, and the often difficult life once they reached the Dakota territory. Laskin also discusses the state of weather forecasting at the time, and asks some pretty pointed questions ... Read More:

. Desert Solitaire
City Travel Guides > Books > Outdoors and Nature
by: Edward Abbey
January 15, 1990
In 1968 Edward Abbey wrote a memoir, Desert Solitaire, A Season In The Wilderness, that would instantly be hailed as a nature classic, as well as his bestselling work. While familiar with EA's name the only work of his I'd read up to this point was a woeful collection of the man's `poetry'. Believe me, when I say there's a definite reason for the quotes around the word poetry. Apparently the work is considered somewhat of a nature hymn, along the lines of Henry David Thoreau's Walden. This is a perfect example of poor criticism propagating myths down through the years. This is not to say that there is not some fine writing in DS, but neither its consistency nor tone are akin to Walden's....Although these events happened over 3 seasons, the book condenses them down into ... . Unstoppable Global Warming: Every 1,500 Years, Updated and Expanded Edition
City Travel Guides > Books > Outdoors and Nature
by: S. Fred Singer, Dennis T. Avery
January 25, 2008
I am a solar physicist, who has also studied climate change, and atmospheric dynamics. I do not find such books to be anything more than bunk. The author is a well known bunk writer. If you wish to believe in the tooth fairy, you will like this book. Otherwise, read less uplifting books, such as an "inconvenient truth", or the technical writings of the GISS (goddard institute for space science) group (without governmental whitewash), or the NAS (national academy of science ) reports on global change.
Although a natural variability (from the Sun) exists, they totally support the view that the current variability is associated with manmade greenhouse warming..
