After reading reviews for this book I made the purchase hoping to have the basics of solar water heating covered. The book does that very well. Like most of us I'd love to see a book covering a detailed step by step installation with tools, equipment, costs, etc. But people with a handy man ability or a bit more like myself (builder)can figure things out pretty easily. Over All an excellent resource!

As a Certified Arborist, I was very eager to read this book. I spend most of my working hours aloft, in trees, so this book was right up my alley (tree). Unfortunately, the author's lack of interesting character development and a rambling narrative style made me not like this book, at all. It was tough to make it through. Indeed, what little character development there was made me dislike most of the climbers in this book. I was especially annoyed with the individuals who illegally climbed the big trees as younger men and then, once they had made some measurements and published a few scientific papers on that subject, soon became reactionary elitists who kept the trees to themselves and their colleagues via secret maps and such. First I have to admit I did NOT purchase this title from Amazon. I bought it at a local used bookstore - where I buy most of the books I read. (If I can get it used I don't buy "new." - That's "green" ...right?)

Now about the book. "Late to the party, much?" I can't believe the publication date on this is 2008. Where has the author been until now? Is he just cashing in on the most recent "green" movement? All the info in the book should be common knowledge by now...? Or have some people really not gotten the memo yet? Or perhaps this is aimed at the crowd who swallowed the line (promulgated by Limbaugh, et al) that climate change was a liberal myth? Now they're finally waking up to the new reality. Love this book makes wonder why we travel so many millions of miles into deep space when so much of the ocean remains a mystery. Would recommend this as a present to almost anyone its that compelling.

Annie Dillard is an excellent writer of course, and I loved her little

National Geographic have compiled the most comprehensive blue-print of planet Earth and its surroundings. (the moon, mars, milky way etc) The book is well designed aesthetically and practically, beautiful in it's complexity but organized in a way thats easy to follow. it doesn't get any better than this.

Most guests at my house notice the giant blue book pretty quickly and have shown nothing but amazed impressions.

I definitely approve of this (honestly) hefty purchase. It's worth it

In January of 1888, a terrible blizzard, which came to be known as the "Schoolchildren's Blizzard" blew in across the Nebraska & Dakota Territory prairie. It was so-called because the deaths from the blizzard were largely of children who left school because of the bad weather coming. Sadly, they left "at the moment when the wind shifted and the sky exploded (2)."
Using a wide variety of sources, Laskin has put together this account of that fateful day, but the book is much more than just a retelling of the event. He also details other immigrants' experiences such as tough crossings, and the often difficult life once they reached the Dakota territory.
