A young American bike racer treks to Europe to compete as a professional.
This is a true slice of life story that captures your interest but ultimately doesn't reach its potential. The intensity of the early chapters doesn't hold throughout as the themes become repetitive. The author is a fine storyteller, weaving many interesting vignettes, and those were enjoyable. If you are a cyclist or a competitive athlete, you will probably like this book more than most. Even though it didn't seem to go anywhere, it was a fun read and was worth the ride.

Fred Krupp's environmental activism has given him an extraordinary view of what it takes for business and greens to collaborate for mutual success. His group, Environmental Defense, shook up McDonald's with a consumer revolt over plastic containers and 10 years later Krupp shook hands with McD's CEO on having done the right thing for both the environment and business. In 2007, he helped negotiate a reasonable path forward for a dirty coal power plant. C-suite executives, their sustainability people and communicators have no better guide through the current war on carbon than Krupp's book.

The Author makes very sound arguments as to the underlying reasons liberals have such an intense disdain for anything that is contrary to their position. When real truth is held up and given a fair stage onto which to expound its arguments, honest logic prevails. After all real truth is meant to set us free, and any censorship of that or intentional manipulation of such should sour any reader association to that element. The author has done us all a great service by letting us have a peek at what really motivates the liberal mentality

As the creator of a now three year old garden of shrubs, bulbs and perennials, I got this book just in time for the pruning lessons, but sadly too late for the soil preparation lessons!
I recommend this book to anyone who is ready to move beyond the glossy magazine spreads and into the realm of truly effective techniques that do require hard work, but that also have long-term results.

I've never even heard of Mr. Robert Leo Smith. Is he a Nobel prize winner? The world's most renowned ecologist? What is so special about this book that it can justify a whopping $120 price tag? It's no secret college textbook authors reap from a captive market in students who are forced to buy texts for required reading, but this takes the cake. And it will lead me to find other courses that don't require a student's entire paycheck to unearth the secrets.

This book took an item we take for granted today, salt, and discussed its history. Some have criticized the author for including so many recipes. I disagree. Salt is used in cooking after all, and to put salt into a proper context we need to witness how it was used.

I enjoyed how the author wove the various aspects of the salt trade into a coherent history. For instance, that salt was so important in wartime never struck me before, though it seems obvious now.

A good, hard to put down read, Salt: A World History is a good book for people who like history, economics or the culinary arts.

William Cronon's book Changes in the Land illuminates the relationship and impact the European colonial settlers had with their environment in New England. The main premise for this book is that different human cultures interact with their environment according to their cultural norms and subsequently have varying effects upon their surrounding environment as a result. Furthermore, Cronon illustrates that these effects created by humans on the environment have consequences which in turn affect the human population and its society.
