The program Dr. Karp presents in this book was a lifesaver during the first three months of my daughter's life. We didn't follow his plan down to the letter (and Dr. Karp says it is adaptable for each baby's needs) because my daughter hated having her arms swaddled in, so we swaddled her arms-out and it worked like a charm. She started sleeping through the night at 8 weeks, and the four "S's" worked incredibly well when she needed help calming down. I really appreciated the fact that this plan helped us help her adjust to the world during her "fourth trimester" in a loving and comfortable way. People now tell me that they have never seen a happier, more content child than my little girl!

After reading numerous parenting books and being a very busy father with very little spare time to read these books, How To Have a New Kid by Friday is clearly the best. The first 5 chapters lay the groundwork and all the examples that follow explain the execution of the principles. I have had a remarkable improvement in my kid's behavior after using the recommendations of this book. Clearly a must have for all parents.

This book covers the basics of what you need and why, but doesn't completely cover the topics. Although a fairly okay read, Nina Garcia's previous book, The Little Black Book of Style, is more helpful.

However, my opinion may be biased as I am extremely into fashion and style, so I have high standards for these kinds of things. It should be mroe helpful for those that aren't as style-conscious, because people like me already have everything there plus other things that are more handy and look better on certain body types.

This book is a follow on to the author's Newsweek cover story about the widening gap between boys and girls academic performance in the United States. She makes the case that, just as we rallied in the 90s to help girls catch up to boys in math and science, we need to do the same for boys in reading and writing. The book cites a great deal of research from schools across the United States to show how this phenomenon is taking shape. It's really interesting stuff. Essentially, education in the US uses teaching methods that favor girls. At times the book is a little like a text book, but it offers startling conclusions that any parent with school-aged children needs to understand.

we were loaned this book when we found out we were pregnant and ended up buying our own copy. i'm the sort of person that likes to plan things, and this made so much sense to me! i started using this schedule when our daughter was about 2 1/2 months and she fell right into the pattern. we were pretty flexible with it as she had reflux and i was having nursing issues, but she's done great. she started sleeping for 8 hours at night and taking 3 one hour naps a day at 3 months, by 5 months she was up to 9 1/2 to 10 hours at night and since then has moved up to being in bed by 7 or 7:30 and sleeps until 6 am, she also takes a 2 hour morning nap. i also breastfed, so i don't agree with the reviewers who say you can't use this book if you're breastfeeding. it worked for ... *Invaluable explanation of how baby sleep cycles work. Specifically, a baby starts out in a very light form of sleep and is easily awoken. After 20 minutes s/he cycles into a deeper sleep mode and remains that way for about 40 minutes before starting the cycle all over again. What this means for parents: If you're holding or wearing a sleeping baby, you need to wait 20 minutes after s/he falls asleep before placing him/her in a crib - otherwise s/he'll probably wake up.
